The Dallas Mustangs have been as
hot as a Texas afternoon lately as they blazed through another incredibly successful championship season. Mustangs swimmers young and old were making big splashes as they raced across the country from Dallas to Austin, Orlando and Minneapolis. Our B/C swimmers led the charge as they competed on July 17th –18th in the 10 & Under B/C Championships which was hosted by Duncanville. The team finished 3rd overall. As can be seen by the results, our young Mustangs did a fine job!
Individual swimmers finishing in the top ten (first place finishers in bold face):
Alexandra Brown, Spin Beck, Derrick Brown, John Bannon, Nicolas Saliba, Hannah Penley, Preston Yetts, Alexandra Weber, Alexandra Barinka, Joyce Yee, Sean Sessel, Avery Rape, Alexandra Young and Rori Barnes.

10 & U Boys 200 Free; Preston Yetts, Nicolas Saliba, Derrick Brown and John Bannon.
Our older swimmers were competed in the Senior Circuit Championships, which would be the first of two outstanding meets for the Mustangs in Austin. Teams from Mexico and Canada joined those from across the United States, for the last big "tune up" before the National level meets. Only the top three teams bring home a prestigious Senior Circuit Championship banner. This was exactly what our swimmers wanted to achieve going into the competition, and exactly what they achieved finishing 2nd overall. Mustangs contributing in the scoring department were:
Sara Haney, Courtney Patterson, Katie Hermann, Miki Bohan, Rania Elwani, Katie McClelland, Elizabeth Myers, Naoko Imoto, Katina Maisterellis, Alison Wimer, Jeff Graves, Josh Barrett, Nathan Rice, Bart Wickard, Jeff Livingston, Mike O’Keeffe, Andrew Priest, Steve Kemmerling, Billy Coleman, Brandon Jernigan, Adam Wright and Ben Mayo.
Forty-one of our Mustangs visited Austin the following weekend in search of yet another Texas banner, at the Texas Age Group Swimming Championships (TAGS). Everyone could see us coming from a mile away because of this year’s championship T-shirts…a huge "D" on the front and a huge "M" on the back…great shirts! The TAGS shirt wasn’t the only thing about our team that was catching people’s eyes – it was our swimmers as they raced their way to another top ten finish and another banner!
Our 15-18 women were amazing as they captured their age group’s team award, scoring more points than any other age group winner!
The following swimmers were the Mustangs point scorers:
Debbie Forinash, Sarah Wells, Sara Alwen, Sara Haney, Megan McNamara, Amy Danchik, Katy Crawford, Clare Williams, Leslie McCormick, Alexandra Jennings, Megan Daniel, Lauren Roth, Meredith Monroe, Meagan Bolanz, Krystle Knott, Margeret Henderson, Adriane Devereux, Emily Frasco, Meredith Grubb, Beth Geis, Nicole Keller, Caroline Jennings, Kathryn Collier, Michael Carpenter, Thomas Ayers, Kenneth Wherry, Rory Peterson, Warren Renick, Brian Stephens and Andrew Hansen.
Junior Championship qualifying times were made at TAGS by Sarah Alwen and Jeff Girard, which earned them a ticket to Orlando, Florida, joining teammates: Amy Danchik, Courtney Patterson, Sara Haney Katie Hermann, Sara Wells, Debbie Forinash, Brian Stephens, Jeff Graves, Rory Peterson, and Warren Renick. These swimmers finished 35th out of about 300 teams at the Southeast Junior Championships. Our swimmers who stepped up to score points were Sara Alwen, Sara Haney, Courtney Patterson, Katie Hermann, and Brian Stephens.
And finally, our top swimmers traveled way up to Minneapolis, Minnesota for the Phillips 66 National Championships. Katie McClelland, Katrina Maistrellis, Alison Wimer, Elizabeth Myers, Naoko Imoto, Jeff Livingston, Brandon Jernigan, Bart Wickard, Billy Coleman, and Nathan Rice came home with a 24th place finish out of all the teams in the country.
A highlight of the meet was Katie McClelland finishing 4th in the 100 meter breaststroke swimming a personal best time.

Doug Moyse has joined the coaching staff of the Dallas Mustangs in the capacity of Head Age-Group Coach. Prior to joining our team Doug was with the Tom Landry Sports Medicine and Research Center. As Aquatic Fitness Coordinator, he was in charge of a variety of aquatic programs and assisted with the coaching of the Masters Swim Program. Before joining the Landry Center, Doug was Athletic and Aquatics Director at the Lincoln City Club and the Signature Athletic Club.
Prior to relocating to Dallas, the Louisville, Kentucky native was an Age-group and Strength Coach for the Lakeside Swim Club. The strength and dry land programs developed for the national team by Doug had an impact - one of the national team members was "Madame Butterfly", Mary T. Meagher, current world record holder in the Women's 200 Meter Butterfly.
Doug was an age-group Kentucky state record holder in the 1650-yard freestyle. He swam for Plantation Country Club in Louisville prior to college. In college, he swam for Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio). He set, or was a part of, 8 school records for Wright State in freestyle, butterfly, and relay events. He was named the Most Valuable Swimmer his freshman year, won the Raider Award (Coaches Award) his junior year, and was named the Team Captain his senior year.
Doug has a Bachelors degree in Business from Wright State and a Masters degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
Throughout the years Doug has continued to compete in Masters Swimming. He is part of a current FINA World Masters Record 200-Meter Free Relay (short course) record which has stood for over six years. Coincidentally, Dallas Mustangs Head Coach Mook Rhodenbaugh is also on the relay.
Doug will be coaching the Red and Blue groups at the CFB Natatorium from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and also coaching the Silver group at Highland Park. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Doug will be maintaining the swimmers meet accounts and doing the team’s entries for the various meets throughout the swimming seasons. If you see Doug on deck or around the pool, please be sure to introduce yourself and welcome him to our coaching staff!
Adele Wherry has been working on the meet accounts and will be sending out statements to all swimming families. As explained earlier in this newsletter, Doug Moyse will be handling the meet accounts in the future. Therefore, if there are questions regarding your account please address them to Doug. He can be reached at 214-559-4219.
Apparently there has been some confusion regarding the name, address and telephone number of our treasurer. George Cornelius is our Treasurer and he handles all of the swimmers dues accounts, NOT meet accounts. Any questions regarding dues accounts can be directed to him at 972-416-4217 or geocorn@onramp.net George’s address is: 2113 Antibes Dr., Carrollton, TX 75006.
New parent orientations will be held during the second week of September. The meetings are open to parents who are new to our team or to those who wish to be better informed about swimming and the Dallas Mustangs. If you are new to our team or missed the orientation last year, please make a point to attend. The first orientation will be at Highland Park Pool on September 14th at 6 p.m. and the second at CFB Natatorium on September 16th at 5:30 p.m. See you there!
The Dallas Mustangs will have a family picnic at Northaven Park on September 12th, from 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. This year we will be having the picnic "catered". For the price of $5/person, there will be a choice of either a hamburger, cheeseburger or chicken with sides of potato salad and beans and finally, cookies for dessert. There will be a sign-up sheet on September 7th & 8th at both pools - please let Barb Knott know by the 8th if you will be attending. Families are asked to provide their own drinks and to bring either chairs or blankets to sit on. Also, bring baseball gloves, basketballs, frisbees, jump ropes and any other items that might be fun in a group.
(Northaven Park is located on Northaven Road which is just south of Forest, between Marsh and Midway). If you have any questions concerning this event, please contact Barb Knott, at (972)733-3256.
Since many of the schools in the area do not allow printed materials about outside organizations to be distributed to students, it is sometimes difficult to get the word out about the Dallas Mustangs. Last year it was suggested that one of the ways to increase our visibility in the schools would be to have the swimmers wear their spirit wear to school (shirts and shorts, etc). The first Monday of the month was chosen and was dubbed "Mustang Monday". As we start a new season, please keep this in mind and encourage your swimmer to wear their team apparel to school when possible. Remember that there are financial incentives (dues reimbursement) for recruiting team members!
The bulk of the information in this newsletter is about the achievements of the swimmers and what is new with the team. While it is wonderful to acknowledge the hard work that goes into swimming, it is equally important for swimmers to be recognized for their academic and other extracurricular accomplishments. As we all know, swimming takes a great deal of dedication and athletes must use their time wisely if they are to become successful in school and in this sport. This is all to say that if your child has received an award (such as in OM, Reflections, Cub Scouts), has been recognized in an organization such as an Honor Society, has had perfect attendance at school, etc., please let Wendy Begg know and it will be printed in the newsletter. You can reach me at 972-307-3128 or email me at
teg45@home.comDuring the course of the year the Dallas Mustangs will host four meets. The first one is the annual Haunted Hat Meet to be held at Loos on October 16th - 17th, for BB/B/C swimmers. It is a tremendously well attended meet since it is the first one of the season for our region. By the same token, it requires many volunteers to make the meet run smoothly. Jeff Veazey has graciously volunteered to be the Meet Director for the team and he will no doubt, be calling on many parents to help out. So watch for information regarding the meet in the weeks to come and volunteer to help make it a success.
View and print a

Ads can be business or spirit ads (encouraging statements to a swimmer or the team) and can be either a quarter, half or full page. This is a great way to support the team, the sport of swimming and for businesses to advertise to a captive audience! Remember, you earn Mustang Bucks equal to 25% of the value of your ad contracts. Ad contracts should be submitted to Jeff Veazey at Highland Park Pool or put in the box at Loos marked "Highland Park".
