Mustang Monthly- Internet Edition

August 2007

The Mustangs are coming off another exciting season and we have high goals for the upcoming season.  We will continue to offer a top-notch program for the entire family.  Again this year we will have swimmers competing at every level, from the beginner to national and even international qualifiers.  We can take our swimmers as far as they wish to go if we all work together.  Our club is extremely proud of its members and their great accomplishments.  To follow are some highlights from the meets this summer beginning with our most elite meets.

MEET RECAPS

2007 United States Swimming National Championships

The Dallas Mustangs traveled to Indianapolis with 17 of our top swimmers to compete in this summer’s United States Swimming National Championships.  The meet attracted some of the top swimmers in the world, including world record holders Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff, Kate Ziegler, Ryan Lochte, and Brenden Hansen.

The Mustangs had some great swims during the weeklong competition and finished in 13th in the team standings.  Matt Thompson earned a spot on the United States team which will be traveling to Chiba, Japan for an international competition held Aug 21-24.  Matt was also awarded the 18 and under National Championship in the 100 back.  Meredith Monroe and Nate Clark picked up Olympic Trial qualifying times in the 200 back and 400 IM, respectively.

Congratulations to the following Mustangs for not only qualifying for the top competition in the country this summer, but also for competing well at Nationals.

Junior National Championships

WOW!!!  What an ending to the 2007 long course season.  The Mustangs saved their best for the last meet of the summer and came away with the biggest team win in the club’s history.

361 teams and over 1400 of the best 18 and under swimmers from around the country gathered at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis for the 2007 Long Course Junior National Championships August 6-10.  The Mustangs were represented by 19 swimmers at the storied Indiana facility (the site where a dozen aquatic Olympic teams have been selected over the past 25 years).  It was obvious that the Mustangs felt a little of that magic during the week as we powered to a 65 point win over the second place team, Mecklenburg Aquatics out of North Carolina.  The Mustangs had the highest point total of any winning team since the Juniors meet was put back into the national schedule three years ago.  It was truly a total team effort as 14 out of the 19 Mustangs contributed to the point total and the Mustangs’ cheers could be heard throughout the week of competition.

Matt Thompson led the charge with four wins and four meet records in the 100 and 200 backs, and the 200 and 400 IM’s.  Also scoring individually for the men were Clint Hallum, Caleb Veazey, and Max Murphy (Max picked up an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 100 back!).  The women were led by Spin Beck, who picked up three third place finishes – 100 and 200 breast and 200 IM.  The other women who scored individually were Meredith Monroe and Kannon Betzen.

Congratulations to this year’s Dallas Mustangs Junior Nationals Champions.  You are a special group of athletes and the Mustang family is extremely proud of your accomplishments.  Allison Arnold, Spin Beck, Kannon Betzen, Leah Jones, Grace Kittle, Stephanie Martin, Meredith Monroe, Lauren Roth, Maddie Steiner, Catia Weickgenant, John Bannon, Clint Hallum, Max Murphy, Matt Thompson, Andrew Tran, Caleb Veazey, Lamar Weeks, Scott Weeks, and Eric Zeller.

2007 Summer Sectional Championships

The Dallas Mustangs were a dominant force at this summer’s United States Sectional Championships held in San Antonio, July 25-28.  The Mustangs nearly doubled the second place team’s point total en route to the team’s third Sectional title in as many years.

Kannon Betzen picked up a couple of victories, along with a national qualifying time in the 100 breast and Caleb Veazey also achieved a national cut in winning the 800 free.  The Mustang relays were again one of our strengths in the meet and showed our team’s depth.  The most impressive relay event for us was the women’s 400 medley relay, where the Mustangs “A”, “B”, and “C” relays placed 1st, 2nd and 5th, respectively.

Congratulations to the following Mustang individual qualifiers at this meet:

TAGS LC Champs (Jul 18-22)

We went down to Austin with high hopes of getting another top ten finish at TAGS but this season it was not meant to be.  As a whole we swam very well.  Individually we qualified as many people or more than ever but our traditionally strong Mustang relays hit a few snags.  With the new time standards that allow “off’ year people to qualify for TAGS it is even more important than ever to score relays.  We had more 9th, 10th, and 11th place relay finishes than I can ever remember.

We’ll just have to make sure this winter that it doesn’t happen again.  A 13th place overall team finish was not terrible to be sure, especially given that our program typically has our kids getting better as they mature instead of burning out like many other teams.  Case in point, look at the top 5 teams at TAGS and compare them with the top 5 teams at Sectionals and Juniors.  What you do see is the Mustangs getting better at each level and the other teams not even close to holding the same positions.  We’ll continue to stay with our formula for success.  Go Mustangs!

Below is a list of those qualifying for individual events at TAGS.  Those that are bolded won at least one event and those that scored individual points are in italics.  Individual highlights were Taylor Temple winning 3 events, Audrey Gruber scoring in all seven of her events and Natalie Rathjen scoring in six out of seven of her events.

Christopher Alkire (13), Cassidy Beckwitt (14), Emily Elson (10), Erin Florence (12), Eric Futscher (12), Tiffany Futscher (9), Des Godfrey (14), Audrey Gruber (10), Emma Gruber (12), Ann-Claire Karalyos (12), Caitlin Klemme (11), Connor Mullen (11), Sam Murphy (13), Lauren Murski (11), Courtney Nichols (11), Natalie Rathjen (11), Taylor Temple (13), Leon Tjahjono (13), Harrison Tran (12), Annelyse Tullier (10), Casey Watters (13), Jake Watters (12), Michelle Wessman (11)

COPS BB (May 18-20)

This early season BB long course meters meet was held at Oak Point Recreation Center in Plano.  This meet was for any thirteen and up year-old on the team without A times in an event, fully qualified BB swimmers (at least 3 BB times) or those swimmers with one or two BB times were welcome to swim those specific events as well.  Thirty-three Mustangs made the trip up I-75 and all but two of them had at least one best time.  We finished 6th place out of 17 teams and the coaches in attendance (Kameron and Chris) were happy with how everyone swam.

Here is a list of those who scored points in the meet.  Those swimmers whose names are bolded won at least one event. Way to go Mustangs!

Davis Benn (10), Danna Callahan (15),  Patrick Crowling (14), Caroline Florence (9), Erin Florence (12), Stephanie Grote (15), Jon Hoffman (13), Berkley Johnson (11), Sarah Jones (12), Caitlin Klemme (11), Connor Mullen (11), Courtney Nichols (11), Jeffrey Nichols (13), Adam Rathjen (9), Annelyse Tullier (10),  Michelle Wessman (11), William Wessman (9), Brian Yen (12)

Rose City  A/BB Invitational (Jun 1-3)

This annual event was relatively well-attended given there is about 90 minutes of driving and it requires an over night stay.  Forty-nine Mustangs helped the team finish a strong 3rd place out of 18 teams.  Held in Tyler at the Fun Forest Pool the meet seems to either be held in a very hot and sunny environment or in a driving rainstorm.  Regardless of the extreme conditions, the Tyler people always do a great job of making all who attend feel welcome.  Coaches Lia and Beth were on deck braving the heat but they sure did like the “heat”  the kids were generating in the pool with many best times and great swims.

Below is the list of those who scored in either the A or BB division in the meet.  Swimmers whose names are bolded won at least one event.  You rock Mustangs!

Tom Lalor Invitational (Jun 8-10)

This was our team trip this summer to Pensacola, Florida.  After a 12-hour bus ride full of cards, trivia, I-Pods, snacks, DVD Players, etc., we finally rolled into our destination in one piece.  We finished third in the meet despite not even swimming the last day and not waiting around until Saturday afternoon was restarted due to a thunderstorm stoppage.  It was an indoor pool but very much like an airport hanger it was metal and apparently a few years earlier in inclement weather the roof actually took flight!  So it was good that they didn’t want to take chances and it just gave us the opportunity to explore Pensacola a bit earlier that day.  The kids enjoyed a couple of days of great weather prior to the storm so nobody was really that bummed out.

Below is a list of those who scored at the meet.  Those whose names are bolded won at least one event.  Forty-two Mustangs competed in the meet and showed those Floridians a little bit about how competitive us Texans can be!

Aaron Applebaum (13), Allison Arnold (15), Spindrift Beck (16), Cassidy Beckwitt (14), Jack Beckwitt (16), Kannon Betzen (18), Luke Blaylock (12), Elsie Cardenas (15), Hannah Ferrin (15), Caroline Florence (9), Erin Florence (12), Des Godfrey (14), Anna Beth Gruber (14), Emma Gruber (12), Bolton Harris (16), Tanner Harris (13), Leah Jones (15), Sarah Jones (12), Miyo Malouf (13), Stephanie Martin (17), Will McNamara (14), Connor Mullen (11), Max Murphy (17), Kyle Savage (17), Erin Smith (17), Taylor Temple (13), Matt Thompson (16), Leonardo Tjahjono (13), Casey Watters (13), Jake Watters (12), Ann Weeks (12), Scott Weeks (15)

SWAT B/C (Jun 8-10)

This 12 & under meet was held at the Duncanville High School Natatorium and was attended by twenty-six Mustang swimmers.  We finished 3rd out of 17 teams despite our “low” number of attendees.  This means those that were there did pretty well!  Below is a list of those who did make it to Duncanville and scored points for their team.  Those whose names are bolded took first in at least one B or C division event.  Special kudos to Jaclyn Zhou for her 6 first place finishes!  Great job Mustangs!

ATAC/NTN A/BB (Jun 22-24)

This long course meters meet was held at the Southlake pool and the Mustangs brought over eighty kids to swim fast and have a good time doing it.  We finished first out of twenty-one teams and almost every swimmer had at least one best time.  Many had all best times!

Below is a list of those who scored points for the team.   Mustangs rule!

A Champs (Jul 5-8)

This meet is also known as the TAGS Q meet (qualifying meet) but it really serves as a nice long course qualifier for either TAGS, Sectionals, or even Junior Nationals.  It was held at the CISD Aquatic Center in Southlake and was attended by a little over Seventy Mustang swimmers.  We placed 4th out of 17 teams and although it was an abbreviated meet for most of our strongest TAGS, Sectional, and National level swimmers we swam well enough to place where we did despite only swimming one relay the whole meet!

Below is a list of those who scored points in the meet.  The swimmers whose names are bolded won at least one event.  Allison Arnold won six of them!  Congratulations to all of our Mustangs!

Allison Arnold (15), Jack Beckwitt (16), Emily Elson (10), Hannah Ferrin (15), Erin Florence (120, Eric Futscher (12), Melanie Futscher (17), Stephanie Futscher (18), Audrey Gruber (10), Emma Gruber (12), Bolton Harris (16), Greg Hoffman (15), Leah Jones (15), Ann-Claire Karalyos (12), Grace Kittle (18), Fernando Lara (15), Sam Murphy (13), Jordan Newman (15), Courtney Nichols (11), Natalie Rathjen (11), Lauren Roth (17), Nicholas Saliba (16), Erin Smith (17), Jessica Temple (17), Taylor Temple (13), Bailey Thompson (18), Andrew Tran (16), Harrison Tran (11), Annelyse Tullier (10), Caleb Veazey (16), Liam Veazey (13), Jake Watters (12), Keegan Watters (15), Scott Weeks (15), Catia Weickgenant (16)

BB Champs (Jul 13-15)

This long course championship meet was held at the new Mansfield ISD pool.  We had only 20 Mustangs entered in the meet and still finished 2nd out of 18 teams!  More of our 13 & Over BB swimmers really need to start pointing towards the end of the season championship meets!  We swam well at the Mansfield pool and the meet had relatively short time-lines since not that many people were there.

Those Mustangs listed below scored points in the meet.  Those whose names are bolded finished first in at least one event.  Awesome performance Mustangs!

Aaron Applebaum (13), Davis Benn (10), Caroline Blaylock (10), Sara Granger (13), Stephanie Grote (15), Jon Hoffman (13), Berkley Johnson (11), Alex Knitch (13) , Pablo Lara (14), Connor Mullen (11), Jeffrey Nichols (130, Sydney Patterson (12), Katie Radford (15), Laura Rathjen (11), Mead Robuck (11), Alyssa Rusch (12), Jo Jo Veazey (10), Catherine Ward (13), Michelle Wessman (11), William Wessman (9), Jaclyn Zhou (12)

B/C Champs (Jul 20-22)

The Summer B/C Champs was held at the GCAT (Grapevine-Colleyville) Pool.  It (as the other Summer B/C meets was competed in yards and was for 12 & under swimmers only.  It is interesting to watch a meet there, especially when they have kids in all ten lanes!  We had 30 kids participate in the meet and we finished a very respectable 5th out of 19 teams.  That’s what I’m talking about Mustangs!

Below is a list of those who scored points at the meet.  Those who won an event in either the B or C division are bolded.  Congratulations to Alvin Jiang for winning all six of his events. Virginia Tiernan had 3 firsts, 6 seconds, and 2 thirds! Rebecca Wessman also had 3 firsts and 2 seconds!

Silver II – What is it?  How do I qualify for it?

A couple of years ago, we added another group at HP and named it Silver II.  It consisted primarily of those Silver Group swimmers who had competed at TAGS in individual events and could handle less “wall-time” and a bit more intensity.  It also allowed us to have more room in our late Silver group, giving us a more manageable group size during the winter season at HP.

The Silver II group meets Monday thru Friday at 4:30 PM at HP.  Since the Gold Group at this location already uses most of the pool during this time period, entrance into the Silver II group has been limited. At the moment, the group is full. Please understand that admission into this group is by invitation only, by the Head Age Group Coach, Doug Moyse. It is based on performance and work ethic and not on the convenience of scheduling. Any questions should be directed to Doug.

Team E-mail Communication

As most parents and swimmers already know, the Dallas Mustangs is one of the largest swim teams in our LSC. We are active in three locations which is wonderful! However, it does at times, make mass communication somewhat of a challenge. The following information is geared primarily towards new parents and swimmers but returning swimmers may find it helpful as well.  Our primary means of communication is done via e-mail. In the next few months there is probably going to be a lot of information coming your way—scheduling changes, information on the annual intrasquad meet, various social events, meet information, parent meetings, etc. It is extremely important that you let me know if you have not been receiving e-mails or if you have a change of e-mail address at any time during the year. Many e-mails are being returned to me.  My contact information is Donna Watters, 214-890-0227 (home), 214-535-3205 (cell), vp@dmswim.com or watters7@sbcglobal.net.    We also have a team telephone line, which has general information and is also updated with pertinent scheduling information each week. The number is 972-530-SWAM (7926).  This becomes particularly important for last minute changes when e-mails cannot be distributed quickly enough or when there are problems with the system.  Finally, you will occasionally receive handouts that have been sent home with your swimmer which contains information about upcoming meets or team-sponsored social events.  We try to send home a minimum amount of paper information with swimmers simply because it tends to get lost on the way home.
