Meet Reports

COPS BB Invitational (April 17-18)

Thirty-Three of our Mustangs traveled to the Oak Point Recreation Center and placed a strong second out of ten North Texas teams in this early season long course meet.  Only one of our swimmers failed to record at least one best time!  Special congratulations to Eric Futscher and Shelbi Hendricks who each now possess at least three 10 & Under “A” times!  Others to get at least one “A” time are Tori Beckman, Bolton Harris (AA), Malin Kenny, Miller Pyke, and Nicholas Saliba.

Below is a listing of those who participated in the meet.  Only four of the thirty-three did not score points! Those that have their name bolded, finished first in at least one event.  What a great way to start the season!

A/BB Check-Off Challenge Invitational (April 24-25)

This meet was held at North Lake College and ran relatively smoothly and close to the published timelines.  The Mustangs dominated the older divisions and placed a close second out of twenty-one teams.  We more than doubled the score of the third place team!  Special kudos to Matt Thompson who hit the water six times and came out the winner each time!  Casey Watters got her first individual TAGS cut in her first meet of the season.  Seventy-six Mustangs competed in the meet and about 2/3 had at least one best time.

Below is a listing of the swimmers who competed in the meet.  Those that won at least one event in either the “A” or “BB” Divisions are listed in bold type.  Congratulations to all of our Mustangs for great efforts and a bunch of great times!

BB Long Course Invitational (May 7-9)

This long course meters meet was held at the CISD Aquatic Center in Southlake.  The Mustangs just swam great the whole weekend.  Despite not swimming any relays we finished a respectable fifth place out of seventeen teams, less than twenty points out of third place.  We love to swim relays as a team, but when many of our swimmers show up late for the warm-up, it places a large burden on the coaches to spit out relays quickly instead of focusing on getting people ready to swim fast by giving them a good warm-up.  Let’s start getting behind the blocks way before the posted warm-up times!

Many swimmers were able to get some important “A” time standards.  The following all made at least one “A” time:  Cassidy Beckwitt, Julia Cuaderes, Leah Jones, Travis McDaniel, Alicia Nicoud, Delaney Rolfe, Nicholas Saliba, Kyle Savage, Casey Watters, Jake Watters

Those listed below competed in the meet.  All twenty-nine had at least one best time!  Swimmers whose name is bolded won at least one event.  Great job Mustangs!

Christopher Alkire (10), Cassidy Beckwitt (11), Jack Beckwitt (13), Sarah Blue (13), Morgan Bowser (13), Skyler Clark-Fernandez (13), Julia Cuaderes (11), Stephanie Grote (12), Lauren Hill (13), Leah Jones (12), Meagan Keesee (14), Malin Kenny (11), Travis McDaniel (16), Will McNamara (11), Alicia Nicoud (14), Megan Reardon (13), Clyde Rembert (15), Delaney Rolfe (12), Matney Rolfe (15), Nicholas Saliba (13), Kyle Savage (14), Christian Sharp (13), Erin Smith (13), Jessica Temple (13), Lisa Van Amburgh (12), Casey Watters (10), Jake Watters (9), Burke Wiggins (14), Alexus Williams (12)

GCAT Senior Circuit #1 (May 1-2)

The first of the summer’s Senior Circuit meets was held at the new pool in Keller, Texas.  It proved to be a relatively fast pool for our team despite the fact that most of our swimmers had only been training long course meters for a couple of weeks.  In order to qualify for this meet a swimmer had to have at least one “A” Senior Circuit Time Standard.  These standards are much more challenging than the United States Swimming Motivational Time Standards that we see more often (i.e., A, BB, B, C).

Each successive Senior Circuit meet in the Summer has tougher entry requirements so don’t expect to see thirty-eight Mustangs entered in Senior Circuit #2 in late May.  If points were scored in this meet we undoubtedly would have won going away.  The meet proved to be a true test of where many of our Olympic hopefuls stood with a little more than a two months left before the USA and Canadian Olympic Trials.  Below is a listing of those who competed in this high level meet.  Those that are listed in bold type won at least one event.  You go Mustangs!

Amanda Arrington (16), Meg Austin (14), John Bannon (15), Bri Barfield (15), Caroline Barnett (15), Spindrift Beck (13), Jeff Benson (18), Jonathon Berrettini (18),  Candace Blackman (18), Jennifer Blackman (18), Molly Bollen (15), Byron Carlisle (16), Stephanie Futscher (15), Beth Geis (17), Meredith Grubb (16), Emma Gunning (14), Kate Gunning (17), Eric Gusa (20), Brooks Haller (17), Clint Hallum (15), Courtney Hamiliton (17), Codie Hanson (17), Alexandra Jennings (15), Grace Kittle (15), Andrew Knudson (17), Rustin Kormos (17), Reagan Marshall (17), Meredith Monroe (15), Matt Primeaux (18), Katie Roberts (17), Lauren Roth (14), Erika Saito (18), Katie Smith (18), Maddie Steiner (15), Alicia Stevens (15), Bailey Thompson (15), Matt Thompson (13)

COPS B/C Division II Invitational (May 1-2)

This twelve and younger meet was held at the Plano Aquatic Center.  The Mustangs finished second out of eight teams with forty-three swimmers competing.  Of these swimmers, only three failed to achieve at least one best time.  Many even tried new events that they had never done before.  Hopefully the experiences were positive enough for them to try them again!

Below is a listing of those who competed in the meet.  Those that are bolded won at least one event in either the “B” or “C” divisions.  Elizabeth Crowling won all four of her eight and under events!  Way to get after it Mustangs!

Kendel Ahnell (12), Kristin Arnold (10), Stephanie Arnold (8), Alethea Atkins (12), Elisa Banowsky (11), Caroline Blaylock (7), Luke Blaylock (9), Alan Chen (12), Anna Crowling (6), Elizabeth Crowling (8), Patrick Crowling (10), Susan Duncan (10), Megan Ernst (11), Emily Fitzgerald (8), Alex Fraley (10), Aly Fuqua (10), Bradley Gommesen (9), Joe Gray (7), Laura Gray (9), Stephanie Grote (12), Tanner Harris (10), Hayley Heiner (9), Craig Hunter (9), Katy Hunter (11), Morgan Koranda (8), Kristine Larsen (10), Timmy Lo (9), Cameron Lundberg (11), Miyo Malouf (10), Will McNamara (11), Boni McVey (6), Meggy McVey (10), Abbey Mock (9), Jillian Mock (12), Kazoumi Motoike (8), Courtney Nichols (8), Sydney Patterson (9), Jackie Peiser (11), Delaney Rolfe (12), Lesley Rowland (10), Alyssa Rusch (9), Evie Thompson (8), Max Zotos (7)

Volunteer Super Stars

As many parents and swimmers know, last weekend we hosted the DM Classic swim meet at SMU. Despite the fact that it was a large meet which had four long sessions, we managed with the help of many on our team, to host an excellent meet.

We had a new Meet Director, Jim Cuaderes who did a great job of putting out a few fires and dealing with some last minute “issues”. Chef Jeff Veazey did a tremendous job keeping everyone fed and watered – and managed with his team, to turn the hospitality/concessions into a profit making venture. Tom Grubb and his team of timing system volunteers, worked well before the meet setting up the pads, laying the cables, setting up the scoreboard and raising up the large tarp that we worked under (enormously increasing the pleasure factor as a volunteer!). Adele Wherry, who tirelessly works for the Mustangs in countless ways, fielded all the meet entries, printed out the heat sheets and ran the computer for the duration of the meet.

But there were two new Volunteer Super Stars that shone all weekend. And they are Phillip Stevens, dad of gold group swimmer Alicia Stevens, and Jenny Cuaderes, daughter of Jim and Linda Cuaderes. Both Jenny and Phillip worked as runners for the timing system operators and the computer operators. Their attention to detail and promptness in getting the job done (getting the lane timers sheets distributed and collected in an orderly and timely manner) and doing it with a smile, contributed to the overall success of the meet!

Thank you to all volunteers for your hard work!

Upcoming Meets

Meets that we are hosting and will need volunteers for:

  1. Texas Senior Circuit Long-Course Meet #3: June 4-6th
  2. DASA Divisionals: July 14th & 15th
  3. DASA All-Stars: July 19th

Yup, one big meet down (DM Classic), several more to go. And we all know what that means – we need your help! We have the Texas Senior Circuit Meet on Friday, June 4th through Sunday, June 6th. There will be many fast swimmers from all over Texas attending this meet so if your swimmer is not participating, it’s a great meet to watch. And we can find a job for you that is up close to the action!

The meet director, Lilli Hansen, can be contacted at 817-860-0882 or at lillian.Hansen@tccd.edu should you wish to volunteer.

DASA is a series of country club divisional meets followed by an All-Star meet. As this is our big fundraiser, we absolutely need everyone’s help. It is a great time to “get your feet wet” (no pun intended) if you are new to volunteering at meets. There will be more information forthcoming but please put those dates on your calendar.

Important Volunteer Information

Another volunteer issue that needs to be addressed is that of the need for parent volunteers for key positions on the team. In order to host meets, teams must have certified timing system operators, computer operators and officials. At the moment, we have timing system operators and computer operators who run all the meets – regardless of their own swimmer’s participation in the meets! The person who has been running the computers at all our meets, Adele Wherry, will be retiring next year as her son will be graduating. We have other computer support volunteers but they too have older swimmers that will graduate very soon. And at the moment, we are in a real crunch for officials.

Please seriously consider getting involved in your child’s swimming team. We are all busy. We all have something else to do. We can all find excuses. But it is the swimmers that will lose in the end if we cannot host meets due to lack of parental involvement. If you are committed to this team’s success and wish to contribute as an official, computer operator or timing system operator, please contact Adele Wherry as pres@dmswim.com for training information.
