 Intrasquad Meet

The annual Intra-squad meet has roared by for another year.  Once again, the Loos pool was rocking as our swimmers competed to find out which one of the eight teams had the most team spirit.  About 140 swimmers were split up into eight teams and each swimmer swam a couple of 25's.  And at the end of the night, Lane 5 was victorious as the best cheering team!  Thank you to all who came out to be a part of such a fun night.

Lane 5 Cheering Champions: Adriene Devereux, Caroline Barnett, Codie Hansen, Trayce Womack, Jake Watters, Stephanie Martin, Hannah Ferrin, Steph Futscher, Megan Austin, Des Godfrey, Bri Barfield, Kimberly Crowson, Isabel Miller, Amanda Campbell, Dakota Smith, Michael Smalley, Kylee Craggett, and Craig Hunter.

Swim Meet Updates

LAC BB/B/C Invitational (Oct. 11-12)

This meet was hosted by Lakeside Aquatic Club at their Flower Mound location.  A brutally long Friday night session, made this meet a tough one for the swimmers, coaches, and parents.  The last heats of the 500 free finished between 10 and 11 PM at night.  Despite the long sessions we still had 72/74 swimmers record at least one best time at the meet.  Our swimmers finished second to LAC and doubled the third place team’s score.  Below is a listing of those swimmers who competed in the meet.  Swimmers whose names are written in italics won at least one event in their division (BB, B, or C).  Great job Mustangs!!!

Little Splashers Unclassified Meet (Oct. 18-19)

Thirty-Seven Mustangs swam their hearts out to finish third in a field of seventeen teams at this annual event.  All but two of the kids swam at least one best time.  An unclassified meet allows all levels of swimmers (A, BB, B, C) to compete together without restrictions on how fast they might be.  The meet was held at the friendly confines of Loos Natatorium and ran a little long but had plenty of good competition for all who showed up.  Congratulations to high point winners Anna Crowling (5), Elizabeth Crowling (8), and Eric Futscher (8) for winning their respective age groups.  A list of the entrants follows. Those swimmers whose names are written in italics won at least one event. Way to go Mustangs!

Dallas Mustangs Buddy Program

Thank you to all the current families that have volunteered to participate in our new buddy program and welcome to all the new families! The purpose of this program is to make transition to year-round swimming, as easy as possible and to have the new swimmers feel welcome on the Mustangs.  Based on the number of volunteers, each “buddy family” was assigned 4-5 new families to contact and answer any questions they may have about swimming or about the Mustangs.  These buddy families will be available to introduce the new families to the coaches, other swimmers or parents, to help them fill out swim meet forms, explain what to expect from their first meet, what equipment they may need, etc.

If you would like to help or if you have any questions, please contact either Donna Watters at 214-890-0227 or Marti McNamara at 214-369-1352.

Poinsettia Fundraiser

By now, most families have read the email recently sent out regarding our team poinsettia fundraiser. To summarize, please, please, please, order from the Mustangs (that’s fundraising pleading and begging at its finest!) The plants are coming from a nursery in Tyler and will be delivered sometime the week after Thanksgiving.  They are all 6 inch red, and should be about 15-17 inches tall and very full.  They will have green, red, or gold foil already wrapped around the pot (to go with any décor!) and will be sleeved for easy carrying. The profit from the sale of these will go directly into our operating budget!

All orders need to be submitted to the pools with check attached, by Thursday, November 13, no exceptions.

Thank you Dallas Mustang Volunteers!

This past weekend, we hosted the 17th annual Haunted Hat Swim Meet. I must say there was an incredible showing of Mustang parents and swimmer volunteers. For the first time ever, we were overflowing with help at the computers and timing system (and that is a happy statement, NOT a complaint!) There were countless donations to hospitality, clerk-of-course was well staffed, the timers were abundant – so all we can say is THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Three people who really deserve the spotlight are Adele Wherry, Tom Grubb and Victor Kimm. Adele is the computer system guru. She sets the meets up, deals with all the entering teams and coaches, and performs countless other tasks before the meet occurs. She then works and supervises all those operating the computers for all sessions during the meet. Tom Grubb is the coordinator for the timing system. He sets up and supervises the setting up of the timing system the day before the meet, as well as coordinates with North Texas, the renting of the equipment. Again, he works the meets and supervises those operating the timing system, and then takes it all down with the help of other volunteers, when the meet is done. Victor Kimm is our meet director. Again, he does a lot of organizational tasks to set the meet up, get volunteers, etc. so that the meet runs smoothly. During the meet he is present to troubleshoot and address any last minute problems or conflicts that may arise.

It is a tremendous amount of work to host a swim meet. As I’ve pointed out, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. If you see Adele, Tom or Victor around the pool, please be sure to thank them for their hard work and remember that when they volunteer, your swimmer benefits from their efforts!

Mustang Bucks

We recently have received many questions regarding the Mustang Bucks program so we thought it beneficial to reprint the information in the newsletter.

Mustang Bucks are a tuition credit incentive program. Mustang Bucks credits can be earned through volunteer service at the swim meets we host, sales of meet advertising and lane sponsorships and referral of new swimmers to the Dallas Mustangs.

All Mustang Bucks credits are applied at the beginning of the swimmers next swimming quarter. Mustang Bucks have no tangible cash value and can only be applied as a credit on future tuition payments.

Mustang Bucks may be earned for:

Volunteer Service

Mustang Bucks are issued for qualified volunteer service at the swim meets we host. Mustang Bucks for meet volunteer service (four opportunities per year) are issued as follows:

  • 5-10 hrs per meet/event - $10
  • More than 10 hrs per meet/event - $25

Note: up to two members of one family may qualify for Mustang bucks per meet/event.

All volunteer jobs at the swim meets we host, except for lane timers, qualify for Mustang bucks. Other qualifying opportunities will be identified in conjunction with the event. Older swimmers may qualify for Mustang Bucks if they are capable of filling a volunteer spot in the same capacity as an adult. Volunteers must sign in and out at the activity to be eligible for Mustang Bucks. Questions regarding the volunteer program may be addressed to any Board member or the person responsible for the meet/event.

Advertising/Lane Sponsor Acquisition for Swim Meets

Every family is encouraged to assist in the sale of advertising in the heat sheets and lane sponsorships for each of the swim meets hosted by the Dallas Mustangs. Mustang Bucks credits will be issued to a swimmer equal to 25% of the advertising and lane sponsorship value sold by the swimmer’s family.

New Swimmer Referrals

Swimmers and their families are encouraged to let their friends and associates know about the Dallas Mustangs. A Mustang Bucks credit of $50 will be issued to a swimmer referring a new swimmer to the Dallas Mustangs. (Note: the new swimmer must list the current Dallas Mustang swimmers/family name on their registration form in the “referred by” section).

New Treasurer

We have a new treasurer, Shannon Rusch. Shannon and her family are new to the Dallas area and she very graciously stepped up to take the place of Cathy Corral who will be moving very shortly. Shannon's contact information is as follows:

treas@dmswim.com

If you need to mail her a tuition check, her mailing address is:

603 Hood Dr., Coppell, TX 75019.

Swim Team Tryouts

Do you know someone who would like to swim for our team but missed the big team tryout dates? Not a problem! We will continue to have tryouts on Tuesdays at 4:30pm at Carrollton Farmers-Branch Natatorium and at 5:30pm at Highland Park Pool and at Loos Natatorium.

Meet Entries

Here are just a few helpful hints when submitting entries:

  • Fill out the meet name and date – this is imperative since there are many entries and different meets being submitted to the coaches.
  • USA Swimming ID: This is the number that identifies your swimmer. Each year, once registration has been processed, every swimmer is given a new registration card but maintains the same number. If you do not have the card with you (and believe me, most of us don’t!) the swimmer’s ID number can be calculated as follows:

Date of birth in the following format: MM/DD/YY; first three letters of first legal name; middle initial or *; first four letters of last name (if less than designated letters, insert *).

  • Team Code: DM is our team code.
  • Legal first name MUST be on form; preferred name if applied but if same as legal name, just leave it blank. The preferred name will most often be on the heat sheets.
  • Age: Sounds easy but you must write down what age your swimmer will be on the first day of the meet. This is important when the host team determines which age group your child will swim in.
  • In order to determine the event number, go to the meet information that has either come home with your swimmer or you can find it on the North Texas website under “Meet information”. Usually on the last page you will find the event #’s as well as the event name (eg. 200 yard freestyle). NOTE: Boys events are ALWAYS even numbers, Girls events are always odd numbers.
  • Fill in the blank space with the event number; circle the code for the type of stroke (FR – freestyle; BK – backstroke; BR – breaststroke; FL – fly; IM – individual medley).
  • Submit the form to the supply room or file at the pool BEFORE the date indicated on the meet information. Attach a check made out to the Dallas Mustangs (put your child’s name and that it is for a meet, in the memo section of your check). Please note that the deadline for entry is different if meet information is downloaded from the internet. In order for our coach Doug Moyse to enter all the swimmers in the various meets, he must have the entries turned in to him at a date that is EARLIER than what is indicated for the host team. In other words, the host team requires teams to submit their entries by a certain date but Doug needs the information earlier so that he can process it all and submit consolidated entry information to the host team. What this boils down to is that usually, the meet information is due to us by about two and half weeks before the meet starts. There are exceptions of course and the best way to keep informed is to check with your child’s coach or check the bulletin boards at the pools.

Websites

Do you have the Dallas Mustangs website on your list of Favorites? How about the North Texas website? Both of those websites are a key to you being well-informed about what is going on with our team and our LSC. The North Texas website is a wealth of information, with results, meet information, best times listing and many other resources available at a click of a mouse!

Top 10 Reasons To Volunteer With The Dallas Mustangs!

  1. We will call and beg for your help anyhow.
  2. During swim meets that we host, it is the only way to get on deck with the swimmers. It’s a great place to take photos and cheer your swimmer on!
  3. All hospitality food consumed as a volunteer, especially chocolate, is totally calorie free and never counts as cheating on a diet!
  4. The pay is incredible!
  5. You teach your swimmer by example, about the value of volunteerism and service to organizations.
  6. You meet other parents. This may lead to carpools, becoming friends, etc.
  7. We need lots of people to run our team events. We are one of the most respected teams in our LSC and well-known for hosting great meets. It’s because we have great volunteers!
  8. You might get to find out the story behind the name “Mook”.
  9. Number 4 is a lie – the truth is you do get Mustang Bucks, which is a credit towards your swimmer’s dues.
  10. You get the satisfaction of being involved in your child’s life. For some, swimming is an unfamiliar sport – becoming involved at some level will only bring knowledge about it.

GO MUSTANGS!
