This is a long course championship
meet which serves as a great opportunity for many of our thirteen and older
swimmers to either end the season with some personal bests, or to extend their
season by making time standards for Sectionals (or TAGS) held at the end of the
month. It was held at the relatively
new Southlake facility and our Mustangs came ready to rock n’ roll!
We finished a strong second to COR
in the team battle, while swimming a limited number of relays, to keep our
swimmers focused on their individual swims. Below is a list of our swimmers who
scored points for us at the meet. Those
that won an event are listed in bold print.
Their age is in parenthesis immediately after their names.

The FAST team ran this meet at the
Irving pool at Northlake College. We
were disappointed as a team that the meet was not held indoors, as it was bid
and voted for earlier by the members of our North Texas Local Swim Committee
(LSC). However, we were determined not
to let it keep us from swimming our best and getting as many kids as possible
qualified for our Texas State Championship meet (TAGS). Despite the hot temperatures outside the
pool, our swimmers were hot in the pool as well!
Those swimmers who already had TAGS
cuts in certain events, for the most part, did not swim those events at this
meet. We also did not swim any relays,
allowing our Mustangs the best possible chance of being fresh for their
individual events. Despite these facts,
we still finished eighth place in the meet.
More importantly, many of our kids swam fast enough to achieve lifetime
bests and qualify for TAGS either individually or on a relay.
Below is a list of swimmers who
scored points for the Mustangs at the meet.
Those who won an event are listed in bold print. Their age is in parenthesis immediately
after their names.
Julia Cuaderes (10), Hannah Ferrin

Catia Weickgenant (12), and Joyce Yee (12).
This year’s championship was held
at Oak Point Recreation Center in Plano.
It was a long course meet format and our Mustangs finished tenth. We only had 18 swimmers in the meet and thus
were really thin for relays. Only two
relays swam for us the entire meet!
Those Mustangs that did show up did us proud!
The following swimmers scored
points at the meet for the Mustangs.
Those who finished first in at least one event, are listed in bold print. Their ages are immediately after their names

(13), and Ashley Willeford (12).
Congratulations to all of our
Mustangs!
This championship meet was competed
in yards at the Lakeside Aquatic Pool in Flower Mound. To say that the format was somewhat tough on
the parents, coaches, and swimmers was an understatement. On account of pool rental issues, the meet
was held on a Friday night and Saturday only.
Friday night’s session did not end until after 11 PM at night. Saturday’s two sessions seemed endless. The B/C meet format will be a priority in
our Local Swim Committee discussions over the next few months.
We finished a strong fourth place
out of eighteen teams that competed.
The following Mustang swimmers scored points. Those that finished first in at least one event are listed in bold

Way to go Mustangs!!!
Summer TAGS were held at the fast
Joe Jamail Swim Center in Austin. An
extra day was added to the format in an attempt to give the swimmers more rest
in between events. The meet was well
run and the Mustangs swam great and took advantage of the fast pool. We finished sixth in the team race (out of
over fifty clubs), which was our best finish in two years at this meet.
Special kudos to our 13-14 Girls
relays of Caroline Barnett, Molly Bollen, Meredith Monroe, and Maddie Steiner,
who set State Records in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays. They also set a North Texas Record in the
400 free relay. Not to be outdone by
the 13-14 girls, twelve-year old Spindrift Beck won the three 11-12 age group
breastroke events (50, 100, 200) setting a state record in the 200 breast in
the process.
Our
Mustang TAGS Swimmers who scored individual points are listed below. Those who won at least one event are listed
in bold type. The swimmer’s age follows
their names in parenthesis.

Each year we schedule orientation sessions for those parents
who are new to the team. It is a casual informational session, which hopefully
addresses many of the common questions and concerns that parents have. Although
it is primarily for parents new to our team, it is open to anyone who would
like to attend.
The sessions are as follows:
At
Highland Park Pool - Sept. 15th at 6 PM
At
Loos Natatorium - Sept. 16th at 6 PM
Parents
who have swimmers practicing at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Pool should plan
to attend the Loos session.
Again,
both new and returning parents are welcome to attend. The orientation session will last about an hour and include an
overview of the team, introductions of coaches and board members, and an
opportunity to ask questions.
For the past several years the Big
Kicker/Little Kicker Program was designed only for the swimmers. This program paired up new swimmers with
experienced team members, either one on one or in a group. The focus was to welcome the new team
members and provide all the swimmers with a spirit buddy. Most of the communication between the swimmers
involved leaving a spirit item (note, candy, etc.) in their buddy’s swim
folder.
This year we would like to expand
this program to include the entire family.
The experienced team members and their families would be available to
answer questions, show their buddy family around the pool, explain when/where
team supplies are sold, how to get and fill out meet entries, and mentor the
new family while volunteering at one of the swim meets we host beginning with
the Haunted Hat swim meet at the end of October.
However --- for this program to be
successful we need a volunteer to coordinate the assignment of families. Of course we also need lots of experienced
team member families to volunteer to participate in the program. Do not worry about not being experienced
enough – if you have watched a workout and/or been to a swim meet, you have
“experience” to share. If you are
interested in either coordinating or participating in this program, please
contact Adele Wherry via email (pres@dmswim.com). Thank you and we look forward to getting all
our swim families together beginning in September.
The Annual Dallas Mustangs Picnic is scheduled for Sunday,
September 28th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Catered barbeque for the whole family
will be provided, at a cost of $7.00 per person at Curtis Park (Lovers Lane
& Dicken's) in University Park.
This is a great opportunity, especially for new swimmers, to
meet other swimmers and their families before the beginning of the swim meet
season. Come bring your family for a great dinner, make new friends and play a
game of soccer or tug-of war. Look for fliers at all pools in early September
and make your reservations soon (see contact information on the fliers).
Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to spend some fun time
with your swimming buddies! Questions? Please contact me at social@dmswim.com. Thanks and hope to see
you all there!
Maryann Martin, Social Chairperson
The start of a new swimming season
brings in many new faces, mostly those of swimmers and their parents. However,
we also have a few new coaches that we would like to welcome to our Dallas
Mustangs team. Karen Miller, is the new bronze group coach at Loos and Thomas Ayers,
who is a former Dallas Mustangs swimmer, will be helping out coaching the
bronze and silver groups at HP. Please take some time to say “hi” and welcome
them to our team!
Many of you have probably already
received an initial email regarding the training clinics that are being offered
through North Texas. In a nutshell, it is an opportunity to help out our team
and meet the requirements we need in order to host swim meets. The following is
a link to the North Texas website; http://www.ntswim.org.
There you will find a link to the calendar which then lists the various clinics
that are being offered (primarily on September 20th). If you have
any interest in attending any of these clinics you may contact Adele Wherry at pres@dmswim.com.
A well deserved thank you needs to
go out to everyone who worked the DASA Championship and All-Star meets in July.
Despite the fact that we ran the meets on a skeleton volunteer staff, it was
truly one of the best run series of meets we have hosted for DASA.
Additionally, it was once again a very good fundraiser for us.
So that everyone on our team can
plan ahead to participate in next year’s DASA meets, we thought we would post
the dates for 2004 now - so that you can put them on your calendars!
Divisionals will be held Wednesday, July 14th and Thursday, July 15th
and the All-Stars meet will be Wednesday, July 21st. And remember, when
you volunteer to work at this particular meet, you receive double Mustang bucks!
In the next few months especially,
there is probably going to be a lot of information coming your way; scheduling
changes, information on the annual intrasquad meet, various social events, meet
information, parent meetings, etc. The way in which this information is
distributed is primarily through email, our team phone line and then of course,
by word of mouth. Usually, that word of mouth is not via your swimmer…
When you are completing your
swimmers’ registration packets this year (both new and returning swimmers) please
list ALL email accounts that you wish to receive notices at. I will be using
only the information provided to me by the Registration Chairman to contact you
(which you in turn have given her). Also, if you change your contact
information in any way during the year, please let us know. A new member
address book is distributed in the beginning of the year and we would like to
have accurate contact information in it.
Questions? Please contact Wendy
Begg at vp@dmswim.com or at 972-307-3128.
Dallas Mustangs website: http://www.dmswim.com
North Texas LSC website: http://www.ntswim.org
USA Swimming website: http://www.usa-swimming.org
All three of these websites has
tons of helpful information. Our website is updated frequently with issues that
concern our team primarily and has an archive of newsletters we’ve sent out
over the years. North Texas’ website has the calendar of swim meets, results of
meets, and many, many other important swimming links.
USA Swimming has an even broader
scope but also educational material for both swimmers and parents (i.e.
nutritional information, injury management etc.).
Check them all out!
Do you have a swimmer who is
accomplishing great things outside of the water? If so, we would like to know
about it, so that he/she can be recognized accordingly. Here are a few
examples; we have swimmers who are accomplished singers, dancers, actors;
swimmers who are involved in scouts, academic clubs, honor societies, and
community service projects.
Please contact Wendy Begg at vp@dmswim.com and we will spotlight them in the
team newsletter!
