COPS BB/B/C Invitational (May 10-11)
A fairly large
contingent (80+) of Mustang Swimmers competed well in a North Texas Division II
battle held at Oak Point Recreation Center in early May. We finished a strong second to the host team
and were over four hundred points ahead of the third place team. Our Mustangs recorded best times in
approximately seventy percent of the times they hit the water!
Listed below
are the swimmers who participated and scored points for the team. Those that placed first in any division
(BB/B/C) are in bold print. Mustangs

DM Classic A/BB 12 & Under (May 9-11)
This meet ran well again with
Victor Kimm and Adele Wherry at the helm.
It started on time and finished ahead of the “published” time-lines each
day. The weather was cooler than
normal for this time of year and it had some kids wishing it was an indoor
meet! Even the cool temperatures didn’t
stop us from swimming like we were on fire!
We place third even with a relatively light crew from our 12 & under’s.
Congratulations to all who
competed. Spindrift Beck won high-point
for 11-12 Girls racking up 5 AAAA time standards. If you are new to the sport of swimming let’s just say the
previous statement is very impressive.
Below is a list of the highest standard achieved for each swimmer in the
meet. Those that won their division in
at least one event are italicized.

LAC Division II BB/B/C Invitational (April 12-13)
Over seventy Mustang Swimmers
ventured up to Flower Mound for the first meet of the summer season. Despite a recent week off, sixty-two
Mustangs recorded at least one best time.
Over half of those had at least two best times. The team finished third in a tight race with
COPS and the home team LAC.
The following swimmers scored
points for the team in the BB, B, or C Divisions. Those who finished first in at least one divisional event are
listed in bold print. Awesome efforts
yielded awesome results! Despite so
many great swims, one swimmer did stand out a bit. Nicholas Saliba had eight swims and eight first place finishes! That one will be hard to top. Great job to all our Mustangs!

The Dallas Mustangs Swim Team Needs You!
Recently, someone asked me to read an article which was
published in a well known swim magazine. It was written by a woman who had been
involved in swimming for a number of years as a stroke-and-turn official. It
was short and to the point; she posed the question, “What would happen if you
arrived at a swim meet and there was no one there to work it?” Basically, she
brought to the attention of the reader, that there are many, many volunteer
hours that go into the planning and running of a swim meet.
She listed some of the “behind the scenes” positions:
Meet Director –organizes
volunteers, officials, coaches information, prints and distributes meet
information, makes sure the meet gets sanctioned.
Computer Operator – sets up the meet, enters all swimmers
from various teams, prints up heat sheets, prints copies for officials, ready
bench, etc., runs the results to post and for awards, and for each team at the
end of the meet.
Award Chairman – orders awards prior to meet, hand
writes certificates, attaches labels for all swimmers onto ribbons, distributes
remainder to teams.
Clerk of Course – runs late entries and relays for deck
seeded and pre-seeded meets.
Timers and Head Timers – gets back-up times on the swimmers.
Timing System Operators – sets up all the pads, buttons, horns,
clocks and runs the system so that the swimmers get an official time.
Hospitality – provides nourishment for all the
volunteers, coaches and officials who work the meet.
Can you imagine attending a meet where the Computer Operator
didn’t enter the swimmers in the meet ahead of time? Or the Meet Director
didn’t get meet information distributed? Or worse yet, if we didn’t have people
who volunteered to train to become a Meet Director or Computer Operator?
Recently, we hosted two large meets and here are some rather
interesting facts about those meets. The first meet we hosted was the DM
Classic in May. There was a total of 463.8 hours worked by 43 volunteers, 20 of
whom DID NOT have a swimmer in the meet. There were 13 swimmers on the team who
did swim in the meet but did not have a parent volunteer at all. The second
meet we hosted was the Senior Circuit meet in June. We had 27 volunteers at
that meet with a total of 443.5 hours worked by those individuals. 4 volunteers
worked this meet that DID NOT have a swimmer participating in the meet.
Incidentally, these figures do not reflect the number of hours put in by the
many officials in our LSC who work the meets. Something else to take into
consideration when digesting these facts is that we currently have over 330
active swimmers on our team! All this is not thrown out here to chastise but
merely to make everyone aware that we need help!
The Dallas Mustangs has grown over the years, but
unfortunately the volunteer bank has not. It makes some of us who have been
involved for years and who will be “graduating” soon, wonder what will happen
to the running of the meets and to the team if we don’t get more volunteer
involvement.
One of the reasons that I believe people don’t get involved
is that they are not familiar with some of the activities associated with
swimming. 11 years ago when my son became involved in swimming, I picked up a
stop watch and timed at a summer club meet. I hadn’t a clue what I was doing,
but someone was kind enough to show me. It has been this way with everything
I’ve done with this team, from ready bench to working on the computer. I’ve
made plenty of mistakes but always have had plenty of resources around to help
me.
What are the personal benefits? One of the biggest perks
about team involvement is that you get to know the kids your child is swimming
and socializing with, and you also meet their parents. Additionally, when
adults volunteer, children take notice of this. Hopefully in having “volunteer”
role models, they will develop an appreciation for the need for community
service. Most of all, it’s gratifying. When you work at a swim meet you are
there ultimately to help a swimmer achieve his/her goals. Without parental
involvement, these athletes would not be able to compete, and that’s the bottom
line.
You will find mention throughout this newsletter, of
upcoming volunteer opportunities. Please take note of them and get involved.
Yes, there are some jobs that require training but most of the activities are
on-the-job training. You can contact anyone of the board members and they would
be happy to direct you to the appropriate volunteer coordinators. (Board
members are listed later in this newsletter).
We look forward to everyone’s participation!
Thank you!

Update
on Loos Pool Rental
The coaches and board members
would like to thank all of our swimming families who responded to our call for
help in contacting DISD, regarding the proposed rental fee increase for Loos
Natatorium. After much discussion with DISD officials and with the support of
our Dallas Mustangs parents, the proposed rent rate was much decreased.
Although the rent contract will now be negotiated every 6 months as opposed to
annually, the renegotiated rental fee is now more in line with what we were paying
in the past.
Thank you to everyone who took
the time to contact DISD officials, explaining the negative impact such a
drastic rent increase would cause for swimming families and the sport in
general. When we show our support together, good things can result! Go
Mustangs!
New
Swimmer Try-outs
Do you know someone who is
interested in swimming? Perhaps someone who swims in a summer league or who is
on the high school team and would like to improve their endurance or strokes?
Well, let them know that we are going to be holding early tryouts for fall on July 14 and 15th, at all three
pools; Loos and HP from 6 – 7pm and CFB from 4:30-5:30pm. We will also be holding team
tryouts at those same times on September 3rd and 4th, when we return from summer break.
Hurricane
Harbor Fun Day for NT Swimmers!
North Texas Swimming is having a
Hurricane Harbor Fun Day for our swimmers on Sunday, August 24th. Tickets are
now available for sale. An Information / Order Form
is online. Contact Denise
Robinson (NT Treasurer) with any questions.
Social News
Our championship meets are just around
the corner and that of course means fire-up party time! We will be having our
championship fire-up party on July 21st at 6pm at Loos. There will not be any
practices at any other pool that evening – all practices will be held at Loos.
National and Gold will be practicing from 4:30-6pm and Bronze, Silver, Blue and
Red groups will workout from 5-6pm. There will be pizza served so bring $3 to
cover food costs and also bring along a good dessert to share with everyone! It
is rumored that there will be some little goodies…
Who should come? Everyone! It is a
great time to celebrate everyone’s success in qualifying for the various
championship meets. Parents, bring your cameras for some good shots of the

North
Texas Swim Meet Clinics
Our
North Texas LSC is holding several training clinics in September. The following
link will take you to the North Texas calendar where you can view the September
activities: http://www.ntswim.org/calendar.html. Basically, the training being
offered is for those individuals who would like to be more involved in the
running of a swim meet. The clinics offered are for Certified
Timing System Operators, Meet Directors, Computer Operators, Team Registration
Coordinators and Stroke and Turn Officials. If you are interested in any of
these clinics, please check the website for more information and watch for the
announcements on the NT homepage. As the time approaches to hold the clinics,
there will be more information as to the exact time and location.
Many Volunteers Needed!
DASA Divisional and All-Stars
Meet (July 9th, 10th and 16th)
Annually, the Dallas Mustangs host
the DASA Divisional Championship and All-Star swim meets. These meets bring together, in a
championship format, approximately 1,800 recreational summer swimmers for the
final meets of their summer season. The
Dallas Mustangs host these meets as a fundraiser for our team in that the DASA
League pays us to host these meets. This
year the dates/times for the meets are as follows:
Wednesday, July 9th - Division C: warm-up at 8 a.m., meet runs 9 a.m.
- Noon (approximately)
Division B: warm-up at
Noon, meet runs 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (approximately)
Thursday, July 10th - Division D & E: warm-up at 8
a.m., meet runs 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (approximately)
Division
A: warm-up at 11:30 a.m., meet runs 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (approximately)
Wed., July 16th All-Stars: warm-up at
Noon, meet runs 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Note: All meet finish times are approximate and
are based on last years’ entries.
As you are all aware, it takes many
volunteers to host and successfully run a swim meet of this size. In addition to our parent volunteers, we also
allow many of our swimmers to volunteer at these meets in areas such as ready
bench, runners, awards, etc. In
addition to supporting the team fundraiser, this activity allows our swimmers
to gain an important appreciation for the volunteer efforts that go into each
and every swim meet that they attend.
The
success of these meets is also an important recruiting tool for the Dallas
Mustangs as we have the opportunity to meet some of the best recreational
swimmers in the Dallas area. Many of
these swimmers may also be considering joining a year round swim program, and
through these swim meets, the Dallas Mustangs are their first USA Swimming
contact.
Additionally, the Mustangs Bucks
volunteer awards program provides for double
Mustang Bucks when volunteering at the DASA Fundraiser Swim Meet. Therefore, a volunteer may earn $20.00 in
Mustang Bucks for volunteering 5 – 10 hours, and $50.00 for volunteering
greater than 10 hours. (There is still
a maximum Mustang Buck limit of two (2) credits per family for the event.)
We would like to encourage
everyone, parents and swimmers, to
volunteer in some way to help with the DASA Championship Swim Meets. Parents, you can volunteer by sending an
email to either Victor Kimm (Meet Director) at vkimm@worldnet.att.net
or Adele Wherry at pres@dmswim.com.
At this point, our areas of need are not those that require experience. Simply
helping by being a runner (posting results, picking up lane timer cards etc.,
and working in hospitality) would be tremendously helpful. Swimmers should sign
up to volunteer at this meet with either Coach Mook or Coach Doug. This is one of those opportunities to work
together as a team and get to know many of the other members of the team a
little bit better. Remember – NO Experience is Necessary, We provide On The JOB Training.
Advertising
in the DASA Heat Sheets
At the
end of this newsletter, you will find a copy of the Dallas Mustangs Ad
Contract. In years past, swimming families have contributed to the fundraising
efforts of the team by soliciting ads for the DASA heat sheets. It is, as was
previously explained, a series of meets that is very well attended by parents
from all over the metroplex. These same parents could be potential clients for
businesses run or owed etc. by our swimming families. If you or anyone you know
would like to submit an ad in the heat sheets, please fill out the meet
contract and follow the directions for payment etc. The ad will run in 5 heat
sheets thereby getting a lot of exposure! It’s a great opportunity and
ultimately financially benefits our team.
