United States Open

Over 200 teams from the USA and Canada gathered in Minneapolis to compete in the 2002 United States Open Championships on December 5-7.  The Dallas Mustangs finished in 11th place in the Women’s team standings.  Candace Blackman led the Mustang charge by scoring in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.  Codie Hansen also helped the Mustang cause by scoring in the 200 free.  Candace and Codie joined efforts with Jennifer Blackman, Meredith Grubb and Kaileen Gersper to turn in exciting relay performances that all scored in the top 16.  Congratulations, girls – keep up the good work!

COR Classic

The COR Classic was held at Loos Natatorium and the Dallas Mustangs had a great showing at this prelim-final format! The following swimmers scored points for our team:

Kelsey Emmons, Keegan Watters, Spin Beck, Alex Weber, Alexis Vigier, Kelsey Hendricks, Hannah Ferrin, Ashley Rape, Stephanie Martin, Meaghan Watters, Catia Weikgenant, Molly Bollen, Caroline Barnett, Maddie Steiner, Lauren Roth, Meredith Monroe, Alex Jennings, Grace Kittle, Emma Gunning, Brittany Harvey-Lemons, Katie Smith, Julia Tucker-Huth, Caroline Jennings, Kenley Woods, Kate Gunning, Jennifer Penley, Magie Marshall, Malin Kenney, Will McNamara, Liam Veazey, Caleb Veazey, Kent Irvin, Clint Hallum, Eric Gusa, Andrew Hansen, Ed Wagner, Matt Saunders, and Griffin Marshall.

Kerr McGee Pro-Am – Oklahoma City

The timing of the Kerr-McGee Pro-Am meet was interesting – just before Christmas and during the birth of Kenzie Rhodenbaugh. Despite those challenges, several Mustang swimmers managed to post point for our team:

Jennifer Blackman, Candace Blackman, Codie Hansen, Katie Smith, Spin Beck, Ed Wagner, Fabian Toth, Griffin Marshall, and Eric Gusa.

LAC BB/B/C Holiday Invitational (Dec. 14-15, 2002)

This holiday-time BB/B/C meet was well attended by our Mustang Swimmers despite the time of year.  Over 70 Mustangs drove up to Flower Mound with the intentions of racing well and capturing a bunch of best times.  Despite having about 50 fewer swimmers in the meet than the home team, we narrowly lost to LAC in the team battle, with both teams crushing the rest of the field.  As far as best times go, you could say it was a huge success! Only one Mustang swimmer failed to record at least one best time, and he only swam two events.

The following swimmers achieved at least one of the USA Swimming Motivational Time Standards listed below.  Those that finished first in either the BB, B, or C classes are listed in bold type.  Their age is listed immediately after their names.  For the younger ones under ten, the farther away they are from age ten, the more impressive it is to get a time standard above a C time. Congratulations to all our Mustangs for a job well done!

LAC Winter Challenge (Jan. 10-12, 2003)

Just over thirty of our “A” Swimmers traveled up to Flower Mound for the LAC Winter Challenge Meet.  Many of our swimmers “trained through” this meet, so best times were not as forth-coming as they are at some meets that are held at a different time of the training season.  Despite this, the majority of the swimmers competing still posted at least one best time.  Several swimmers were able to make some TAGS (Texas Age Group Swimming) Time Standards and will be representing the Mustangs at the state meet held at Texas A & M in early March.  Typically these tough standards are in the double to triple A time range.

The following swimmers achieved at least one of the USA Swimming Motivational Time Standards listed below.  Only those aged eighteen and below have age group motivational standards.  Those swimmers whose names are bolded won at least one of their events.  The swimmer’s age immediately follows their name.  Mustangs Rock!

DM Mid Winter BB/B/C Invitational (Jan. 17-20, 2003)

Our Mustang Swimmers won our own meet handily by several hundred points.  We had a strong showing of ninety-three swimmers at the meet, which was held at the friendly confines of Loos Natatorium.  Of all the Mustangs who participated, only three did not post a best time.  The meet ran on time and was well supported by our awesome parents.  Thanks to Victor Kimm (Meet Director) and Adele Wherry for making things run so smoothly.  The coaches (and spectators) really appreciate a well-run meet.

The following swimmers achieved at least one of the USA Swimming Motivational Time Standards listed below.  Those that finished first in either the BB, B, or C classes are listed in bold type.  Their age is listed immediately after their names.  A couple of swimmers were disqualified in their only events so they are not listed since they did not officially complete the race they were DQ’d in.  We will get them next time!  Congratulations to all our Mustangs for many outstanding efforts.

Swim-A-Thon Update

The laps have been swum and much of the pledged money collected. Was this fundraiser a success, you ask? We’ll let you be the judge. To date we have had approximately 100 out of 320 registered swimmers participate in this major fundraising event. Our budget for the Swim-a-Thon is set at $ 20,000.00.  This number was born of the hope that we would see a majority of swimmers participate, since this is an event that we hold only every other year. Thus far, we have raised $ 12,882.00.

The money raised in the swim-a-thon is part of our annual team budget which helps to keep the Dallas Mustangs a financially stable and competitive team. We asked that each swimmer raise a minimum of $75.00 and we offered a special reward for those swimmers who raised $125.00 or more.  The purpose of this article is let everyone know where we stand in relation to our initial goal, to thank those who have participated in the fundraiser, and to remind everyone who has not participated, that it is not too late to make a contribution. Your assistance in reaching our fundraising goals is truly needed.

Congratulations to the following swimmers for having achieved the $ 125.00 benchmark, thereby qualifying for the Dallas Mustang picture frame. In the picture frame will be featured a photograph of the swimmer, his/her respective coach, and our head coach Mook Rhodenbaugh.

Thanks to Jerry Saunders

We would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Jerry Saunders, who has served as the Loos Supply Room Director for many years. Jerry is retiring from his position as his son Matt moves on to a team closer to home. We will miss his laid back manner and his sense of humor in the supply room but we’ll see him at the meets at Loos! Thanks Jerry!

Social News

Our next swimmer's party will be on Monday, March 3rd, at Loos.  This will be our Championship Fire-up Party and we will recognize those athletes competing at Nationals, Sectionals, TAGS, and/or the "BB/B/C" Championships or "A" Championships.  All workouts at both Highland Park and CFB are moved to Loos for the evening. Workouts will be from 5:30 - 6:30 and the party will immediately follow from 6:30 to 7:30.  We will have pizza and drinks for the swimmers and we need everyone to bring a dessert to share.  The cost is $3.00 per person and will be collected at the door.

It is also time to reserve an evening for our annual Swimmer's Recognition Banquet.  This is our best and largest event of the year.  We will recognize those swimmers who attend for their swimming accomplishments, say good-bye to our graduating seniors, and enjoy a terrific slide and sound show. There will also be a guest speaker and a few surprises for the athletes.  The banquet will be held on Sunday evening, May 4th, and reservations will be required.  More details will be announced in the next several weeks but please reserve the date now!

If you have questions about either of these events, please call Stuart Roth at 972-939-1451.

First Call for Photos

As Stuart explained in the Social News, there is a slide show at the annual team banquet. Frankly, it is only exciting and fun if we have many photos to include of all the swimmers from the various pools. I need digital pictures or regular printed photos of your swimmers! They can be of them practicing, competing, enjoying a team activity or just hanging out before or after practice. Also, if you have a senior who will be graduating, I would like a copy of their graduation photo and several of them as young children (the funnier the better!). All photos will be returned but you must put your name or your swimmer’s name on the back of the photos.

You can get photos to me in the following ways:

  1. Email jpeg attachments: vp@dmswim.com
  2. Drop them off to me at Loos and put in the box labeled “Wendy Begg”.
  3. Mail them to me at 2229 High Country Drive, Carrollton, TX, 75007.
