Dia De Padre Invitational (6/15-6/16)
Our summer team trip took
us to scenic Santa Fe. Twelve-plus hours on the way to Santa
Fe on the bus, with almost 60 kids,
was bearable only because of three things….
Advil, Earplugs, and a huge number of PG movies ranging from “Cool
Runnings” to “Ninja Turtles.” Thanks
to a late night, watching the U.S.A.
beating Mexico
in the World Cup game, Coaches Mook and Doug
were in prime shape for the drive back on
Monday morning! Several people tried to
unseat Doug as the “Bop-it” Champ, but he was so successful, that our patient
bus driver even requested that the “Bop-it” be banned from the front of the
bus.
We had a nice hike at a
local National Park and saw some Pueblo
dwellings and some beautiful scenery.
Some lucky swimmers even found a
sleeping rattlesnake on the path and luckily,
decided not to wake Mr. Rattlesnake
up. The older kids
even got to get wet by wading into a river, which had some irritating drop-offs
right as you were entering or leaving the water. A brisk pace back
to the bus left more than one of our champions breathless. We were at an altitude of 7,000 feet above
sea level. Can that affect your
performance as an athlete? Definitely!
It usually takes about a week
to get acclimated to altitude of that magnitude. Despite the altitude, many of the (younger) kids
posted best times at the meet.
We won the meet handily and enjoyed ourselves
thoroughly. Below is a listing of those
swimmers who scored points. The names
of those who won an event are in italics.
John Bannon (13), Caroline Barnett (13), Spindrift Beck
(11), Candace Blackman (16), Jennifer Blackman
(16), Molly Bollen (13), Byron Carlisle (14), Megan Daniel (13), Hannah
Ferrin (10), Kathleen Gallagher (17), Beth Geis (15), Kaileen Gersper (17),

GCAT B/C Meet (June 7-9, 2002)
About twenty of our Mustangs competed in this yards format
meet, held at the GCAT pool in Grapevine.
Only two kids did not have at least one
best time during the meet. Since it has
been since March that we competed in yards format meet, several kids
had all best times. This was a
12-and-under meet, that is geared towards swimmers who are just starting out in
year-round competitive swimming.
Coaches Tammy, Rory, Meredith, and Ann were all pleased with
our swimmers’ performances and improved technique in each of the strokes. We had very few disqualifications (DQ’s). Below is a list of competitors from the
meet. Those swimmers whose names are in italics, scored points at the
meet. Those swimmers whose names are in
italics and in bold print, won their
division, in at least one event. Way to
go Mustangs!
Cally Alvarado (12), Alethea
Atkins (10), Michael Bortnyck
(11), Elizabeth Crowling (7), Patrick Crowling
(9), Shelbi Hendricks (8), Ryan Jones
(7), Billy Keys (10), Nick Kirk
(7), Meghan O’Keefe (8), Megan
Reardon (11), Rosy Rios (11), Samir Saidi (8), Kyle Savage (12), Jake
Watters (7), Sasha West (8), Burke
Wiggins (12), Nick Wiggins (12), and Blake
Woods (10)
Just a little reminder to our swimmers; when you are
competing at a meet, please make sure you talk
to a coach before and after your
races. This is especially important if
you late enter an event (if we don’t know you
are entered in an event, we don’t know to look
for you!).
Congratulations Mustangs!

Volunteer Opportunities
Count down to the DASA
Divisional and Championship Meet (July11-12th and 18th)
Annually, the Dallas Mustangs host the DASA Divisional
Championship and All-Star swim meets.
These meets bring together, in a championship format, approximately
1,800 recreational summer swimmers for the final meets of their summer
season. The Dallas Mustangs host these
meets as a fundraiser for our team in that the DASA League pays us to host
these meets. This year the dates/times
for the meets are as follows:

Note: All meet finish times are approximate and
are based on last years’ entries.
As you are
all aware, it takes many volunteers to host
and successfully run a swim meet of this size.
In addition to our parent volunteers, we also allow many of our swimmers
to volunteer at these meets in areas such as ready bench, runners, awards,
etc. In addition to supporting the team
fundraiser, this activity allows our swimmers to gain an important appreciation
for the volunteer efforts that go into each and every swim meet that they
attend.
The success
of these meets is also an important recruiting tool for the Dallas Mustangs as
we have the opportunity to meet some of the best recreational swimmers in the Dallas
area. Many of these swimmers may also
be considering joining a year round swim program, and through these swim meets,
the Dallas Mustangs are their first USA Swimming contact.
Additionally, the Mustangs Bucks
volunteer awards program provides for double
Mustang Bucks when volunteering at the
DASA Fundraiser Swim Meet. Therefore, a
volunteer may earn $20.00 in Mustang Bucks for
volunteering 5 – 10 hours, and $50.00 for volunteering greater than 10
hours. (There is still a maximum
Mustang Buck limit of two (2) credits per
family for the event.)
We would like
to encourage everyone, parents and
swimmers, to volunteer in some way to help with the DASA Championship Swim
Meets. Parents, you can volunteer by
sending an email to either Victor Kimm (Meet Director) at vkimm@worldnet.att.com or Adele Wherry
at pres@dmswim.com.
At this point, our areas of need are not those that require experience. Simply
helping by being a runner (posting results, picking up lane timer cards etc.,
and working in hospitality) would be tremendously helpful. Swimmers should sign
up to volunteer at this meet with either Coach Mook or Coach Doug. This is one of those opportunities to work
together as a team and get to know many of the other members of the team a
little bit better. Remember – NO Experience is Necessary, We provide On The JOB Training. If this didn’t
convince you to volunteer, perhaps appealing to your appetite and social needs
will! There is a team get-together planned for Thursday, July 18th (after the
All-Star session and clean-up) for all volunteers.
To sum up,
these are the areas where we will need volunteers for all sessions:
Announcer Heat
Sheet Sales
Ready Bench Heat
Winner Ribbons
Runners Awards
Hospitality

DASA Championship Swim Meets a huge success!
