Mustang Monthly - Internet Edition
March - April 2002
Short course season is finished. What a great season. Read the results below of all of the championship meets. The annual Awards Banquet is coming up. Read all about it below. Rowdy Gaines will be there and so should you!
Now we are through spring beak, it’s back to work to get ready for long
course season. We will be hosting the
DM Classic swim meet Friday – Sunday, May 10-12 at SMU, so we will need plenty
of volunteers. Look for sign-ups at the
pools. If someone asks you to
volunteer, try and find time to help out.
This is a great meet and it’s a lot of fun to work. Get outdoors after a long winter cooped up
inside (okay, we don’t live in Buffalo, but it will be a great meet). We continue to be one of the best hosts of
meets in the country and it’s all because of our outstanding volunteers. You can be one and be a part of something
special.
USA
Swimming's National Championships wrapped up the short course season.
This year's meet, March 19-23, took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The
Mustangs had their highest team finish in the club's history, forth place in
the female team scores. All of the six girls who wore the Mustang colors
contributed to the cause. Candace Blackman led the charge by swimming
well enough to step on the awards stand twice (100 fly - 5th and 50 free -
6th). Candace also scored in the 100 free (12th), as did Codie Hansen
(13th). This time for Codie qualified her for the United States National
Junior Team. This is the second year in
a row that the Mustangs have been represented on our country's national junior
team (Candace qualified last year).
All of our relays received medals on the awards stand and we set another 15-16 girls National Record: 400 free relay - 3rd (Codie Hansen, Jennifer Blackman, Kenley Woods, Candace Blackman), 800 free relay - 3rd (Codie Hansen, Jennifer Blackman, Meredith Grubb, Candace Blackman), 400 medley relay - 7th (Codie Hansen, Kaileen Gersper, Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman). Congratulations to these Mustangs and thanks for the great finish to a great season for the entire Mustang family! Entire meet results can be found at http://www.usa-swimming.org/fast_times/template.pl?opt=results&eventid=432
Many of our older Mustangs finished up their season in College Station for the U. S. Sectional meet held February 28-March 2. The impressive facility at Texas A&M fueled many tremendous efforts by our swimmers. Candace Blackman won high point honors by outscoring all of her competitors while reaching the finals (top 8) in all of her eight events. The Mustangs finished fourth in the team standings-
1) Cy-Fair Swim Club 718
2) The Woodlands 612
3) Plano 560
4) Dallas Mustangs 510
5) Academy of Texas 423
6) Nova of Virginia 331
7) Houston Elite 245
8) Katy Aquatics 234
9) Alamo Area 203
10) Blue Tide 188

TAGS Short Course Champs (March
7-10, 2002)
The 2002 Short Course Texas Age Group Championships were held at the friendly confines of Alfred J. Loos Natatorium. While we were not fortunate to earn a coveted banner this winter, your Mustangs finished a hard fought 13th place. We had some of our key players learn some tough lessons with some injuries, sickness, and a DQ or two to test our will a bit. Despite these obstacles, our swimmers competed with their heads held high in typical Mustang fashion.
Spin Beck led all Mustang scorers with 19 points just edging out Hannah Ferrin who piled up 16.5 points herself. Below is a listing of those swimmers who qualified for the meet. Those whose names are italicized qualified in individual events. Bolded names represent swimmers who scored individual points. All swimmers have their age listed in the parenthesis following their names. Way to go Mustangs! Complete met results can be found at http://www.ntswim.org/results.html.

BB/B/C Championships (March 1-3,
2002)
This meet was a tough one for all who entered. Due to some bad weather and ice the Saturday session was first delayed two hours and then cancelled altogether. This meant that all the sessions would be combined into one and it made for a long day for those that attended. The Mustangs who competed did so well that we were able to double the next closest team in points (LAC) in Division C.
Those swimmers who scored points for the team are listed in alphabetical order below. Just because a swimmer is not listed does not mean that they did not swim well. Many swam events for the first time and some were swimming in the more competitive BB or B classes. Whatever time standard a swimmer has achieved prior to the meet (i.e., their entry time) determines what class they compete in for that event. The same swimmer could compete in three different events and place in three different classes. Complete meet results can be found at http://www.ntswim.org/results.html.
Those who finished first in either the BB, B, or C classes are bolded. Their ages are immediately after their names in parenthesis. Great job to all of our Mustangs!

Top 16 - NATIONALLY RANKED DALLAS MUSTANGS
If you have attended (as a swimmer or spectator) “A” level meets, you have probably heard of “Top 16 Reportable” times. These are qualifying times (faster than state qualifying times) set by USA Swimming for each age group and event. If a swimmer makes a Top 16 Reportable time, that time is submitted to USA Swimming by each LSC (Local Swimming Committee). On August 31st of each year, all of the submitted qualifying times are ranked, and the final Top 16 in the nation are published. These swimmers are the fastest 16 swimmers in the nation! These lists are compiled for individual swims and for relays.
The 2000-2001 lists, covering times swum during SCY season (Sept 1, 2000 through March 31, 2001) as well as LCM season (April 1 through August 31, 2001) are final, and can be found on the USA Swimming website at: http://www.usaswimming.org/fast_times/template.pl?opt=news&pubid=2146 or in the January (SCY) and March (LCM) issues of Swimming World Magazine.

10&U Girls Spindrift Beck
11/12 Girls Caroline Barnett

For those families paying tuition monthly, remember your tuition is due on the 1st of each month and late after the 10th. Tuition statements are only mailed out quarterly. Additional reminder: should your swimmer decide to drop from the team -- it is your responsibility to inform the registration chairman, Ted Shaw (shawted@charter.net) or the team president, Adele Wherry (pres@dmswim.com). Tuition is charged to your account until one of these individuals has been informed that your swimmers are no longer swimming. Please help us keep our records current. Thank you.
In order to ensure fair competition, USA certified Stroke & Turn officials are needed at every meet. These volunteers play an important role in helping coaches identify those swimmers who need work on technical strokes. Our LSC is currently experiencing a shortage of volunteers for this very important position and the Dallas Mustangs is no exception. Since USA Swimming meets cannot be conducted without sufficient Officials, new policies are being discussed that would allow meets to be hosted by only those teams having an appropriate number of Officials. The Mustangs currently do not have enough Officials to run a meet. Your help as a volunteer Official is greatly needed!!
Our LSC will be having a Stroke & Turn Clinic on April 27th. These clinics run 3-4 hours long, after which you will be an apprentice S&T Official for 3 meets where you will work under experienced Officials to learn how to be a good S&T Official. The North Texas LSC has the national reputation of having some of the best-trained officials in the United States. Your volunteering as an Official at any of our meets also qualifies for Mustang Bucks. If you have questions or are interested in becoming an Official, please call Jamie Jester at 214-696-4040!! Your swimmer and your team needs your help
