Mustang Monthly - Internet Edition
February 2002
We made it through the holidays and the Championship season is right around the corner. Make sure you’re at the Championship Fire-up Party on Monday, February 25th from 6:00 – 7:30 at Loos. This year we will recognize the swimmers who participated in the A Championship meet and the swimmers signed up to compete at the BB/B/C Championship meet along with all of the swimmers who have qualified for TAGS and Sectionals. This will be a great party. More details below!
This year’s spring break will be March 11-17. There will be no practices for any groups offered during that week. Regular practices will resume on Monday, March 18, 2002.
Thanks to everyone who helped out at the December Holiday Party. Our swimmers had a great time and a great turnout. A very special thank you goes to the Chick Fil-A restaurant on Beltline Road, just East of Marsh Lane, for sponsoring this party. Please reciprocate for their generosity by patronizing this restaurant. Chick Fil-A has been a great partner for our team and we are very pleased to be associated with such a quality organization!
Our Championship Fire-Up party will be held on Monday, February 25th, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Loos. This year we will recognize the swimmers who participated in the A Championship meet and the swimmers signed up to compete at the BB/B/C Championship meet. We'll have pizza and drinks after the presentation of our Spring 2002 Championship T-shirts to those swimmers who qualified for Sectionals and/or TAGS. Please bring a dessert to share and $3.00 per swimmer to cover the cost of refreshments. THERE WILL BE NO WORKOUTS AT HIGHLAND PARK OR AT CFB ON FEBRUARY 25TH. Any Mustang swimmers who want to work out at Loos before the party should show up at 5:00 pm.
Our annual Swimmer Recognition and Awards Banquet will be held at SMU, in the Umphrey Lee Ballroom, on Sunday, April 28th, 2002. The banquet will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will probably be over by about 9:00 - 9:30 p.m. Reservation forms will be distributed soon, but please be sure to mark your calendars now! As many of you know, one of the banquet highlights is a slide and sound show featuring our swimmers and coaches over the past year. We need your help to take photos of our swimmers at meets, practices, having fun beside the pool, etc. All photos need to be turned in to Mook or Wendy Begg by April 5th. Remember, if you have the option, digital photos are preferred.
We also need a few volunteers to help run the banquet. The jobs are simple and take no special skills. Please call Stuart Roth at 972-939-1451, or email Stuart at social@dmswim.com, if you have questions about volunteering!
The Big Kicker-Little Kicker program is off and running. There were a lot of goodies passed around during the holidays. Remember, if you haven’t done this, send each person on your buddy list a note with your name, your favorite stroke, your favorite food, your favorite sport (other than swimming), where you go to school, what grade you’re in, etc. Let them know all about you. Please remember the swimmers are to contact ALL the swimmers on their list. Any questions or lost lists, please call Cindy Woods 972-781-1217.
The Short-course TAGS Championship meet is scheduled for March 7-10 at Loos. The North Texas LSC is hosting this meet and the Dallas Mustangs will be in charge of awards this year. We will put together a schedule of available volunteer time-slots, so keep an eye out at the pools for the sign up sheets. If you are interested in getting a jump on the competition, call Adele Wherry at (972) 418-1544 and reserve your volunteer spot now. They will fill up fast; so don’t miss out on your opportunity!!

*Sleep can help you grow. Some experts believe that getting an appropriate amount of sleep during the 11-14 age bracket is critical in full development in growing. And that too little sleep may have an adverse effect on growth. Some of the experts believe in excess of ten hours.
*The sooner you can get nutrients into the body after a workout, the faster your body will recover. So not only what you eat is important, but when you eat.
*Martina Moravcova, SMU, DM Team Member and Hall of Fame member, recently won over $50,000 while competing for Slovakia in the FINA World Cup Series.
We’ve had a lot of meets since our last newsletter and we’ve had some great performances. Here are the meet updates:
The Mustangs had some great performances over the past couple of months. Some of the highlights during the holiday season included:
*The Mustangs were represented well at the US OPEN in New York in early December. Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman, Codie Hansen, and Kenley Woods combined their efforts to finish third in the women’s club division. This is the second year in a row that our women have finished in third place in this prestigious event.
*This past year’s Kerr McGee Pro-Am meet in Oklahoma City was another showcase for the Mustangs. Our women finished second overall and we finished third in the combined men’s and women’s team score. But more impressive was our 15-16 girls setting 4 out of 5 of the existing national relay records. Those girls were – Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman, Kaileen Gersper, Kate Gunning, Codie Hansen, and Kenley Woods.
*The following swimmers made the North Texas All Star team. The North team narrowly lost to the Gulf All Stars at the meet at Northlake College in January.
Caroline Barnett, Spin Beck, Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman, Kelly Cobourn, Kathleen Gallagher, Kaileen Gersper, Meredith Grubb, Em Gunning, Kate Gunning, Codie Hansen, Caroline Jennings, Meredith Monroe, Lauren Roth, Erika Saito, Kenley Woods, John Bannon, Dennis Bowsher, Byron Carlisle, Eric Gusa, Clint Hallum.
*Congratulations to all of the following swimmers who scored individual points in meets (points are scored by finishing in the top eight in an event, and in some cases, through sixteenth place).
Spin Beck, Hannah Ferrin, Keegan Watters, Caroline Barnett, Em Gunning, Lauren Roth, Alexandra Jennings, Rachel Borden, Meredith Grubb, Caroline Jennings, Meredith Monroe, Maggie Marshall, Molly Bollen, Brittany Harvey-Lemons, Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman, Kate Gunning, Codie Hansen, Kaileen Gersper, Kenley Woods, John Bannon, Clint Hallum, Caleb Veazey, Byron Carlisle, Brooks Haller, Joe Santaularia, Eric Gusa, Andrew Hansen, and Griffin Marshall.

In the last meet of 2001 our swimmers went out and again had an awesome meet. This meet was held at the Oak Point Pool in Plano. Out of twenty-five swimmers, twenty-two had at least one best time. Special congratulations go to Bri Barfield, Erin Morrison, Meredith Higgins, and Meaghan Watters. Each now has three or more “A” times and are now fully qualified “A” swimmers in their respective age groups. In addition to those new “A” swimmers, watch out for Liam Veazey and Casey Watters. Liam and Casey are now fully qualified “BB” swimmers at age eight!
Swimmers who are listed in italics finished first in at least one of the events they competed in. Their age at the time of the meet is listed immediately after their names in parenthesis. Mustangs Rock!!!

The meet was held at the North Lake College in Irving, Texas. We did not send a large contingent to this meet but those that did attend were very successful. All twenty-one swimmers who attended achieved at least one best time. Many had all best times. Each swimmer had to either have a minimum of one “BB” time standard or be thirteen years old to compete in the meet.
Those swimmers listed in italics type finished first in at least one of their events. Their age at the time of the meet is listed immediately after their names in parenthesis. Way to go Mustangs!!!

The 19th addition of Little Splashers was held at Loos Natatorium in North Dallas. The meet is for kids ages ten and under. Thirty-Five Mustangs showed up to compete and thirty-two of them walked away with at least one best time. We finished a strong second in the team battle out of a total of fourteen teams.
Below is a listing of the national motivational times achieved by our “Mustang Little Splashers.” They are listed under the highest time standard that they were able to obtain. The national motivational times begin with the age group 10 & under, so it is not easy for someone as young as 8-years old gets a “B” time or better. For many of the swimmers this is one of the first meets they have ever competed in. All swimmers are assumed to be a “C” swimmer in an event until they are able to post a time and prove otherwise. In some of the more difficult events (like butterfly) completing the event without being disqualified is sometimes a victory in itself for the younger and inexperienced swimmers.
Those listed in italics type finished first in at least one of their age group events. Their age at the time of the meet is listed immediately after their names in parenthesis. Way to go Mustangs!!!

This BB/B/C Invitational for Divisions A & C was held at Loos Pool. Many thanks to all the parents and swimmers who volunteered their time to help make this meet a success. Meet Director Jeff Veazey and club president Adele Wherry had a tough job of recruiting volunteers and officials with the All Star Meet and several high school meets being held all about the same time. Some parents and swimmers even came on Friday night despite the fact that they were to be involved in a different meet the next two days. Thanks to all of you who went the extra yard and also to those of you who contributed effort and $$$ to our hospitality efforts!
We finished a close second in our division. Special congrats to Jonathan Beckwitt, Timothy Moore, and Christie Kimm who are all now fully qualified “BB” swimmers. Listed below are the time standards achieved by those swimmers who competed in the meet. Those who are listed in italics type finished first in at least one of the divisional events they competed in (BB/B or C). Their age at the time of the meet is listed immediately after their names in parenthesis. Mustangs Rule the Pool!!!
