MEET REPORTS

Mustangs Win Medals at Sydney Olympics!

Congratulations to Martina Moravcova and Lars Frolander on their incredible performances at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Martina won silver medals in the 200 free and the 100 fly, while representing Slovakia, and Lars won the gold medal in the 100 fly, representing Sweden. It’s one thing to see the best athletes in the world winning Olympic medals, but it is something much more special to see someone you know accomplishing that awesome feat.

COACHES COMMENTS

Stroke Clinic

The Dallas Mustangs will be offering a free stoke clinic featuring the SMU Men’s swim team on October 14 at the SMU indoor pool from 9:30-11:00 a.m. All swimmers are encouraged to attend. They have some amazing swimmers involved in their program so we’ll see some great demonstrations and get a lot of help on our technique.

On-Going Tryouts

Please note that there is a schedule change for open tryouts for our swim team. From now on tryouts will be held at Loos and Highland Park Pools from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and at CFB from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Remember, if a swimmer recruits another swimmer to the team, he/she receives $50 in Mustang bucks to apply towards the next quarters dues installment! So get out there and recruit away!

Intra-Squad Meet

Our annual Intra-squad meet will be held Tuesday, October 3 at Loos from 5:30-7:30 PM. All swimmers are encouraged to attend. THERE WILL BE NO WORKOUTS OFFERED THAT EVENING AT HIGHLAND PARK OR AT THE CFB NATATORIUM. This is always a blast for the swimmers because it offers them a chance to show their spirit, get to know more of their teammates, and get some racing in before the actual meet season begins. Also, D&J Sports will be at the pool with various swimming apparel for purchase (see details in "Miscellaneous").

Bring A Friend Night

Here is your chance to get some of your friends involved in the great sport of swimming. The Dallas Mustangs Parents Board will be hosting "bring a friend night" at all pools on Thursday, October 12. There will be fun and games, along with refreshments and cake. This is a great way to give your friends a taste of the sport you love so much, and hopefully they will also see swimming as a sport for them.

GENERAL REMINDERS

Newsletter

Hopefully everyone who has email capability is receiving the newsletter and other team notices without a problem. If you currently have an email address and are not receiving the newsletter, please let me know (please include your swimmer’s name and the pool and group he/she swims in). A notice on the bulletin boards at the pools will announce when the newsletter has been posted on the team website. If you do not have access to the Internet or email, you may pick up a copy of the newsletter at the pool where your child swims. However, if you have email please do not pick up a hard copy from the pool. This will help to keep our printing costs to a minimum. I can be reached at wsb45@home.com or 972-307-3128. The newsletter is posted on our website so checking it frequently is also helpful. Thank you very much!

Wendy Begg, Newsletter Editor.

SOCIAL NEWS

Parents Only Social!

Okay Parents, it is now time to get together at a location AWAY from the pools! Away from the chlorine and away from the noise of swim meets! Picture this; socializing with adults who are dressed in something other than team T-shirts, shorts and pool sandals, all the while munching on appetizers and yummy desserts! Sharon and Don Haney have volunteered to host this wonderful evening on November 4th beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share with everyone (please no Power Bar brownies!) and let the Haney’s know if you are coming. Their home number is 972-818-8484. Oh and I almost forgot, the beverages will be provided (we promise, no Gatorade!).

MISCELLANEOUS

Swim Apparel

D&J Sports will be at Loos on October 3rd from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. They will have various swimsuits and other items available for purchase. Additionally, you will be able to order items such as team T-shirts, shorts, sweat suits, parkas, swim bags and wind suits, should you be interested in doing so. If you need an order form ahead of time, this can be picked up at the pools (in folders at H.P. and CFB and in the store room at Loos).

New Phone Number

Please note that Coach Doug Moyse has a new phone number: (214) 559-4219.

USA Swimming ID

As most parents are aware, swimmers are assigned registration numbers as ID’s with USA Swimming. This number must be entered on every swim meet entry form. It is very easy to remember once you have the formula, which goes like this: the first six spaces are the swimmer’s date of birth (MMDDYY – i.e. 1/2/1/6/8/7); followed by the first three letters in the swimmer’s first LEGAL (NOT PREFERRED) name (i.e. Wendy would be W/E/N); followed by the first letter of the middle name (i.e. Susan would be S; if there is no middle name then an asterisk * is used in that space); followed by the first four letters of the last name (i.e. Grubb would be G/R/U/B; if there are less than four letters in the last name then an asterisk * is used in the vacant spaces). So, in this example the USA registration number for Wendy Susan Grubb who was born on December 16, 1987 would be: 1/2/1/6/8/7/W/E/N/S/G/R/U/B/.

Event Sponsors and Heat Sheet Ads

Do you want to know how you can get a dues break? It’s very simple: swimmers who obtain a business or spirit ad sponsor for the upcoming Haunted Hat Meet will receive 25% of the value of the ad in Mustang Bucks! Those Mustang Bucks are applied to the next quarter’s dues payment! Let’s do a little math - a full-page ad, for example, is $175 – that means a swimmer could earn $43.75 in Mustang Bucks. Imagine what the returns could be for a little legwork and effort! In addition, you would be doing a great thing for your team by participating in fundraising.

Another way to show your support is to sponsor a swimming event. Events sponsorships are going for a mere $5/event or $10/3 events but this MUST BE PREPAID! Your name will be listed in the heat sheet for that event (i.e. Event 5, 50 Free, Sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Swim Parent). If you are interested in event sponsorship please contact Adele Wherry ASAP at 972-418-1544. So give yourself a break today and get some ads for our heat sheets!

SCHEDULING NOTES

Because of the continuing construction in front of the Highland Park Pool, we will still be entering the front of the high school to access the pool. There are a few dates that may be an issue due to school related activities. If there are any changes to this in the future, we will let you know (it is helpful to check our swim line, 972-889-SWIM, for any updates). Thank you for your patience! PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE DRIED OFF AND DRESSED WHEN YOU ARE IN THE HALLWAYS OF THE SCHOOL. Also, keep in mind that if any of these times are inconvenient, you can always practice at Loos. Also, remember that all Friday swim workouts for the Silver Group at HP are from 4:30 – 6 p.m. unless otherwise announced.
