Our Coaches

Head Coach – Mark “Mook” Rhodenbaugh – National Group

Mook started his coaching career with our swim club in 1986 and has been the Head Coach since 1989. He is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he started age group swimming with the Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins at age 6.

Mook was an Assistant Coach at SMU from 1988 - 1991. He was voted USA Swimming Southwestern Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1991 and USA Swimming North Texas Senior Coach of the Year in 1995 and 2000. He was recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the Pentathlon National Coach of the Year for 2004. In 2007 he was selected as an assistant coach for the USA Swimming Junior National Team.

Mook is a graduate of Southern Methodist University (SMU). As a member of the SMU Mustang swim team he achieved All-American honors and was named Captain of the team his Senior year. He swam on the SMU medley relay team that once held the American record.

He was world ranked in backstroke, and was 5-time American Champion in the mid-1980s. He represented the United States in International Competition every year from 1981 to 1988.

Mook was inducted into the Buddy LaRosa High School Sports Hall of Fame (Cincinnati, Ohio) in August 1997.

Head Age-Group Coach – Doug Moyse – Gold & Silver Groups

Doug Moyse came to the Dallas Mustangs in 1999. Prior to joining our team Doug was with the Tom Landry Sports Medicine and Research Center. As Aquatic Fitness Coordinator, he was in charge of a variety of aquatic programs and assisted with the coaching of the Masters Swim Program. Before joining the Landry Center, Doug was athletic and aquatics director at the Lincoln City Club and the Signature Athletic Club.

Prior to relocating to Dallas, the Louisville, Kentucky native was an age-group and strength coach for the Lakeside Swim Club. The strength and dry land programs developed for the national team by Doug had an impact - one of the national team members was "Madame Butterfly", Mary T. Meagher, former world record holder in the Women's 200 Meter Butterfly.

Doug has a Bachelors degree in Business from Wright State and a Masters degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.

He is part of a current FINA World Masters Record 200-Meter Free Relay (short course) record which has stood for over seven years. Coincidentally, Dallas Mustangs Head Coach Mook Rhodenbaugh is also on the relay.

Beth Lockwood – Silver,  Blue & Red Groups

Beth Lockwood came to the Dallas Mustangs in 1995. She is an Ohio native and began competitive swimming at the age of 12. Beth’s love of coaching grew out of her swimming experiences and she began attending clinics locally and nationally at the age of 15.

Beth attended Kansas University from 1985 - 1988. She was an Aquatics Director and Coach for 5 years in Ohio. While at the Miami (Ohio) County YMCA she coached age group, national (for YMCA), college and masters swimmers.

Lia Oberstar – Gold Group

Lia joined the Dallas Mustangs coaching staff in 2002. Lia is a graduate of SMU with a triple major in Anthropology, Latin American Studies and Spanish.  She is currently completing work on her Masters in Anthropology.  Lia hales from Indiana and started swimming at the age of six with Ft. Wayne Aquatics.  She was a 5-time Indiana High School swimming champion.  While at SMU Lia received All-America recognition 16 times and was a 4-time NCAA champion.

During her career, she was twice U.S. record holder – individually for the 200 back and as a member of a 400 medley relay that set the U.S. record at the 1997 World Championships. Lia was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1996 –2000 and represented the United States in international competition numerous times. In addition to her coaching duties with the Mustangs and work on her Masters, Lia coaches with Dallas Aquatic Masters.

Karen Miller – Bronze Group

Karen joined the Dallas Mustangs coaching staff in 2003.  She is a California native and started competitive swimming at the age of 9. Karen has her bachelors degree in Accounting from San Jose State University and her MBA in e-business from the University of Phoenix. Karen is a member of the Dallas Aquatic Masters, has coached masters swimming at the North Dallas Athletic Club and is the Head Swim Captain for the North Texas Chapter of the Leukemia Society’s Triathlon Team in Training.

Kameron Kennedy – Bronze Group

Kameron joined the Mustang staff in 2006.  He has an extensive coaching background with head coaching experience at the Hollywood Swim Team and the Malibu/Palisades YMCA in California.  Kameron grew up in Arlington, Texas, went to high school at Trinity High School, and swam for the Mid-Cities Swim Team.

Jeff Veazey – Bronze Group

Jeff Veazey has been coaching and teaching swimming off and on for over 30 years and joined the Mustang's coaching staff in 2007.  In addition to coaching for the Mustangs, Jeff coaches Bishop Lynch High School and the Knights of Columbus summer league team.

His greatest thrill in swimming (other than watching his sons Caleb, Liam and Jonas swim) was placing in the top ten at the 2000 Masters Long Course Nationals in five events.  At 45, he swam the 100 meter freestyle almost as fast as he did when he was 18. 

The part of coaching he loves most is helping young swimmers learn and improve their strokes and sparking their love for the sport of swimming.
