Mustang Monthly- Internet Edition

Welcome from Head Coach Mook Rhodenbaugh

It’s great to be a Mustang!

Something just feels right when you say that.  Of course, I’m a little biased since I’ve been here a while.  But since I have been here the longest, I’ve also been the luckiest to experience all of the greatness of this team.  There are thousands of memories.  Some I get to relive daily, like seeing a mother greet her swimmer with a smile and a towel at the end of practice never gets old.  Others memories make me chuckle, like when I remember dads limping for a week after the team picnic because they over did it in the football game.  Or how about those looks of determination that you can see right through the swimmer’s goggles and the looks of excitement when  they talk about their next meet.  There have also been those times when I can remember a coach lending a shoulder after a tough break and a swimmer helping another after missing a goal.  So it is with great honor that I welcome back all of the past Mustangs for another fantastic season, and welcome all new Mustangs as they begin their swimming journey with our program

I have been extremely fortunate to have had only three presidents since the merger of the Mustangs Swim Club and the Dallas Aquatic Club in 1991.  Our current president, Eric Futscher, has continued the high standard of success that has been the tradition of our club over the years.  And much of the Mustang spirit is attributed to not only his endless commitment, but also the commitment to excellence from the rest of the DM Board of Directors.  Many other moms and dads have also added to that excellence by volunteering to do some of the many tasks needed to be done to provide for our swimmers.  Hopefully in the future, we can get even more of the parents involved in this great sport.  And by the way, we do like to have fun while we work hard.

The Mustangs have been one of the most successful teams in the country over the past decade.  This past year, we were honored as one of only 16 Gold Medal swim teams as part of United States Swimming’s Club Recognition Program.  We have placed swimmers on National teams and won gold medals at the Olympics.  Our age groupers have been in the top ten as a team at the Texas Age Group Swimming Championships every year since 1991 and have broken numerous national records.

All of our swimmers have gained an appreciation for an activity that they can be involved with for the rest of their lives.  They have learned how to be a part of a team in an individual sport.  When they have reached their goals, our swimmers have been taught the importance of setting new goals by many fantastic coaches.  Coaches are another area where the Mustangs have truly been blessed.  I’m sure that I speak for the other coaches when I say; it is an honor to work with the Mustang swimmers.  Swimming has many life lessons that are shared by the swimmer and coach every workout.  There is no doubt that those lessons will help in the future.

Another thing I’m proud of is our uniform.  Red, white and blue.  It just looks sharp when you see that royal blue suit with that red mustang, along with the white cap with “Dallas Mustangs” in blue and the horse in red.  Those horses can run pretty darn fast on that water!

It is a privilege to be involved with this team and to have worked with many great people over the years.  My challenge to everyone on the team now is to continue to contribute to the Mustangs spirit and take memories with you.

It is great to be a Mustang!

Message from Dr. Eric Futscher, Board President

As everyone is aware, we are getting more and more cases of the flu in the Dallas area. The new recommendation from the CDC is that "people with influenza-like illness remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever ((100° F [37.8°C]), or signs of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications."

Since we are a large club, and we are at somewhat of a high risk to contract and spread the illness, we strongly recommend not returning to the pool until your swimmer has been symptom free (coughing, sneezing, etc) for at least 24 hours.

We appreciate your understanding to this matter. If there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you.

LAC BB Invitational (May 29 – 31)

Forty-Four of our swimmers showed up at this BB meet held in The Colony ready to swim their fastest ever and believe it or not only two of those did not get at least one best time.  We finished 9th out of 21 teams despite a relatively light showing for a team that has over 150 swimmers with BB times.  Anyone 13 or over may participate in any events they have never swum before in a BB meet.

Entering a BB meet is a great way for you “A” swimmers to swim events you are afraid to tackle at the A meets in front of your peers.  How can you improve those weak events if you never swim them?  Let’s start coming to these meets in force!  Below is a list of those swimmers who scored points in the meet.  Great job Mustangs!!!

Elizabeth Crowling (14), Patrick Crowling (16), Clare Donaldson (12), Nicole Ewer (12), Kaylan Hardin (12), Caitlin Klemme (13), Gordon Montgomery (10), Natalie Morris (12), William Morris (12), Connor Mullen (13), Whitney Pettijohn (11), Ethan Pittson (8), Charlie Shaw (12), Garrett (15), Annelyse Tullier (12), Dana Valelly (11), Jo Jo Veazey (12), Daniel Withers (16), Max Zotos (12)

DM “A” Mustang Classic (June 5 – 7)

We did another bang-up job of hosting “The Classic” at SMU this past summer.  Meet Directors Jan Miller and Dee Koranda put together a great group of Mustang volunteers to make this meet again run like clockwork.  We were again blessed with great weather although it was “a tad” warm.  Our swimmers didn’t mind the warm weather and were “hot” enough in the water for us to dominate the scoreboard and win the meet handily with 20 other teams battling for the number one spot.

Those swimmers who graced the top-8 and scored points are listed below.  Thanks to all our parents who volunteered their time and congratulations to those swimmers who did the job and helped us win on our one of our “home courts.”

Christopher Alkire (15), Jack Beckwitt (18), Luke Blaylock (14), Claire Brandt (14), Rebecca Brandt (10), Sean Bray (17), Carolina Campbell (10), Michelle Chow (41), Devin Compan (16), Hannah Ferrin (17), Erin Florence (14), Tiffany Futscher (11), Audrey Gruber (12), Emma Gruber (14), Clint Hallum (20), Bolton Harris (18), Tanner Harris (15), Greg Hoffman (17), Alex Huff (15), Alvin Jiang (10), Leah Jones (17), Malin Kenny (16), Pauli Kerr (10), Ellis Ko (11), Fernando Lara (17), Jordan Malone (10), Madeleine Marcos (13), Alex McElya (11), Logan McGill (13), Kenzie Murphy (12), Jordan Newman (17), Connor Nolan (16), Alexander Ober (10), Natalie Rathjen (13), Delaney Rolfe (17), Ali Smith (14), Graham Smitham (17), Gabriela Soza (20), Matt Thompson (18), Marylyn Toledo (17), Andrew Tran (18), Harrison Tran (13), Annelyse Tullier (12), Liam Veazey (15), Claire Walters (13), Jake Watters (14), Catia Weickgenant (18)

GPAC Tom Lalor Invitational (June 12 – 14)

We chose to return to Pensacola for our team trip and again we had just a great time.  We swam great as a team placing 3rd in a competitive Southeastern meet with several college swimmers present for our high school swimmers to race.  Although we swam great for most of the kids it was about spending time with their friends and especially “hitting the beach!”  Thanks to our coaches Mook, Doug, and Candace for weathering a pretty stout 12-hour bus ride and especially thanks to our Mustang chaperones for roaming the halls of our hotel late at nights!  Below is a list of those who scored points.  Awesome job Mustangs!

Luke Blaylock (14), Claire Brandt (14), Rebecca Brandt (10), Devin Compan (16), Megan Ernst (16), Hannah Ferrin (17), Caroline Florence (11), Erin Florence (14), Jacey Hodan (16), Greg Hoffman (17), Alex Huff (15), Malin Kenny (16), Logan McGill (13), Alison Moffit (17), Kenzie Murphy (12), Connor Nolan (16), Delaney Rolfe (17), Matt Roney (17), Matt Thompson (18), Caleb Veazey (18), Jo Jo Veazey (12), Liam Veazey (15)

TRS B/C Invitational (June 12 – 14)

A small but hearty group of our Mustang B/C swimmers showed up at the Grapevine pool in mid-June to try and get some best times and have fun doing so and they were successful at doing both of those things!  Twenty-seven out of our almost 200 B/C swimmers swam well enough to place 6th out of 19 teams in spite of being seriously outnumbered by most of the clubs in attendance.

The small number of Mustangs at the meet must have been a result of: either 1) Summer vacation time 2) Camp time 3) Country Club time or 4)”I don’t want to go all the way out to Grapevine time.”  Regardless of why we had so few B/C level Mustangs there we still need to test out the waters and see if our training is helping us get better!  Listed below are the Mustangs who collected hardware and scored points for the team.

Emily Alton (12), Jessica Ball (7), Connor Berry (11), Catherine Blaylock (7), Parker Capron (11), Becky Derham (12), Julia Helton (7), Kate Hettrick (9), Tyler Hinderliter (8), Malak Hmimy (10), Omar Hmimy (8), Benjamin Hurst (9), Brian Jiang (8), Sofia Lara (8), Sarah Lewis (11), Rachel Myers (11), Ethan Pittson (9), Charlotte Rolfe (12), Gabrielle Schirmer (10), Olivia Schoenecker (12), Sam Schoenecker (12), Shauna Seidel (11), Karina Sell (11), Darcy Smith (9), Madeline Tovar (11), Maria Tovar (9), Issy Tschurr (11), Max Van Cauwelaert (7), Jake Varela (9)

Metro Rose City Invitational (June 19 – 21)

This meet was an “Open” meet which meant that anyone from any level could attend it and take a stab at knocking down some best times.  This meet is held at the Fun Forest Pool in Tyler.  The good folks in East Texas are always so friendly and accommodating to all our Mustang swimmers, parents, and coaches who attend this annual affair.  We had 12 swimmers venture East to compete and they placed a respectable 8th out of 13 teams.  If you attend this meet in the future make sure to bring your sunscreen and a tent because shade hard to come by at this outdoor 50-meter pool!  Those that scored points are listed below.  Way to go Mustangs!

Parker Benn (9), Caroline Blaylock (12), Ryan Brockett (10), Conor Guest (13), Kaylan Hardin (12), Ellis Ko (11), Connor Mullen (13), Darcy Smith (9)

LAC “A” Bill Nixon Invitational (June 26 – 28)

This fast prelim/final meet was held at the Keller pool and was run well by the LAC team and their vast parent volunteer base.  The meet was named after a long-time North Texas Official Bill Nixon who gave countless hours of his time in efforts to improving swimming at all levels in the great state of Texas.  We had some outstanding swims in each age group and ended up winning the meet by over 600 points over the host team and an always competitive COPS team.  The rest of the 20-team field was literally thousands of points behind we did so well as a team.

Congratulations to all who stepped up and performed like Champs and honored the memory of such a great contributor to the sport of swimming in our area.  Many of our younger kids got TAGS cuts and we also were able to capture quite a few Sectional cuts, Junior cuts, and even a couple of first-time National cuts!  Those that swam in finals and scored points individually are listed below.  Incredible job Mustangs!!!

Jack Beckwitt (18), Luke Blaylock (14), Claire Brandt (14), Rebecca Brandt (10), Sean Bray (17), Jake Brown (18), Carolina Campbell (10), Coral Davenport (18), Megan Ernst (16), Hannah Ferrin (17), Erin Florence (14), Alex Fontenot (15), Eric Futscher (14), Tiffany Futsher (11), Des Godfrey (16), Audrey Gruber (12), Emma Gruber (14), Conor Guest (13), Clint Hallum (20), Bolton Harris (18), Tanner Harris (15), Jacey Hodan (16), Greg Hoffman (17), Jon Hoffman (15), Jacob Hum (10), Alvin Jiang (10), Malin Kenny (17), Avery Kesterson (11), Grace Kittle (20), Caitlin Klemme (13), Caitlin Koranda (16), Fernando Lara (17), Maddi Malliard (14), Jordan Malone (10), Madeleine Marcos (13), Alex McElya (11), Logan McGill (13), Will McNamara (16), Alison Moffit (17), Gordon Montgomery (10), Kenzie Murphy (12), Sam Murphy (15), Jordan Newman (17), Courtney Nichols (13), Connor Nolan (16), Alexander Ober (10), Adam Rathjen (11), Natalie Rathjen (13), Alex Robinson (15), Delaney Rolfe (17), Matt Roney (17), Lauren Roth (19), Nicholas Saliba (18), Ali Smith (14), Graham Smitham (17), Virginia Tiernan (10), Leon Tjahjono (15), Marylyn Toledo (17), Andrew Tran (18), Harrison Tran (13), Annelyse Tullier (12),  Clare Walters (13), Jake Watters (14), Keegan Watters (17), Catia Weickgenant (18), Michelle Wessman (13)

MAC/MARS A Champs (July 9 – 12)

Every time we turned around it seemed like we were at the Mansfield pool for A meets this Summer.  There were 4 meets held in the Summer Season here and all were well-run.  It was nice to be at a newer facility for all and it apparently got our kids psyched up to swim fast each time they showed up here.  Many of our swimmers were coming off a prelim/finals meet only two weeks before so most of our top swimmers swam through this meet or swam a very light schedule in preparation for bigger meets held later in the Season.

As a team we again swam great with many swimmers able to secure time standards which allowed them to “extend” their seasons to impressive competitions like the Southwestern Senior meet, TAGS, Junior Nationals, Nationals, or the North Texas Zone Teams.   We placed 5th despite not swimming any relays finishing a scant 23 points out of 3rd place.  The following swimmers finished in the money and put points on the board for the team.  Nice job Mustangs!

Allison Arnold (17), Jack Beckwitt (18), Jonathan Berrettini (23), Luke Blaylock (14), Claire Brandt ( 14), Rebecca Brandt (10), Sean Bray (17), Michelle Chow (41), Elizabeth Crowling (14), Coral Davenport (18), Hannah Ferrin (17), Eric Futscher (14), Melanie Futscher (19), Tiffany Futscher (11), Paul Gerard ((18), Audrey Gruber ((12), Emma Gruber (14), Conor Guest (13), Tanner Harris (15), Greg Hoffman (17), Jacob Hum (10), Alvin Jiang (10), Malin Kenny (17), Pauli Kerr (10), Ellis Ko (11), Caitlin Koranda (16), Fernando Lara (17), Maddi Mailliard (14), Jordan Malone (10),  Madeleine Marcos (13), Alyssa McElya (16), Will McNamara (16), Alison Moffit (17), Gordon Montgomery (10), Lauren Murski (13), Jordan Newman (17), Jeffrey Nichols (15), Connor Nolan (16), Alex Ober (10), Natalie Rathjen (13), Matt Roney (17), Marylyn Toledo (17), Andrew Tran (18), Harrison Tran (13), Annelyse Tullier (12), Claire Walters (13), Jake Watters (14), Keegan Watters (17), Catia Weickgenant (18)

ATAC BB Champs (July 17 – 19)

Forty of our swimmers jumped into the LISD pool in The Colony and all but two had at least one best time.  Most of them had ALL best times!  We finished 6th out of 20 teams in this BB Championship meet and a couple of kids actually helped make some TAGS relays by their individual performances since we used their times and 3 other kids in their age groups to make a composite (add-up) relay time.

Those kids who swam well enough to score are listed below.  Mustangs Rule!!!

Emily Allton (12), Parker Benn (9), Caroline Blaylock (12), Patrick Crowling (16), Patrick Daniels (10), Clare Donaldson (12), Kendall Ernst (13), Sara Granger (15), Kaylan Hardin (12), Benjamin Hurst (10), Caitlin Klemme (13), Alex Knitch (15), Simone Lalvani (16), Pablo Lara (16), Mika Malouf (11), Beau Montgomery (16), Natalie Morris (12), Connor Mullen (13), Sydney Patterson (14), Ethan Pittson (9), Laura Rathjen (13), Eli Recinos (10), Karina Sell (11), Charlie Shaw (12), Kathryn Stouffer (14), Dana Valelly (11), Jo Jo Veazey (12), Catherine Ward (15), Sophia Wilcox (9)

TRS B/C Champs (July 24 – 26)

This meet was held at the 10-laned Grapevine pool which makes the meets run fast but as a coach (and I’m sure as a parent) it is really tough to get the times down off the scoreboard since its so weird trying to figure out what lanes the Mustangs swam in because the “perspective” is so much different than a typical 8-laned pool.  Make sure your kids have Mustang caps on so we can pick them out of the crowd!

We had thirty kids compete in this meet and we did well to finish 5th out of the 18 teams that were entered.  All but four of the thirty got at least one best time.  Over 80% of the time our Mustangs entered the water they got a best time!  Those B/C swimmers who scored points are listed below.  Way to finish up your Season Mustangs!

Jessica Ball (7), Jordan Carl (11), Becky Derham (12), Alex Gerner (11), Kate Hettrick (9), Tyler Hinderliter (8), Brian Jiang (8), Georgia Kelly (9), Sarah Lewis (11), Aaron Monroe (11), Natalie Morris (12), Arjun Nair (12), Ehan Pittson (9), Mary Catherine Reardon (9), Charlotte Rolfe (12), Olivia Schoenecker (12), Sam Schoenecker (12), Karina Sell (11), Maddie Stevenson (9), Abby Tchoukaleff (8), Madeline Tovar (11), Maria Tovar (9), Julia Walsdorf (10), Kennedy Wiegand (8)

Texas Age Group Champs (July 29 – Aug 2)

This super-competitive age group meet was hosted by Texas A & M and it turned out to be one of the best TAGS meet for the Mustangs in team history.  As one of the fastest meets of its kind in the Country we always like to get kids on our team to the meet to give them an idea what it takes to move up to the next level.  After watching our Mustangs perform at TAGS this Summer all our kids have to do is look over the next couple of lanes to them to see some of the most competitive age group kids in the USA.

We won the 10 and Under Boy’s AND Girl’s age group flags in addition to the 13-14 Girl’s one as well.  That is the first time in team history we have won three age group flags at the same TAGS.  We finished a strong 4th place out of the entire state of Texas only 28 points out of 3rd place.  After two days of the meet we were taking photos of the scoreboard and pinching ourselves because we were leading the meet!  Ali Smith lead the way winning the 14-year-old Girl’s high point award and our 10 boy’s just missed a 30-year old record in the 200 free relay winning going away.

Needless to say we are proud of all our Mustangs on the team but it was especially great to see those kids at this meet step up and perform at such a high level of excellence.  They did the work and they benefited individually and we benefited collectively as a team.  Coach Lia, Sean, and Doug were happy to be a part of the meet. Other coaches who weren’t able to make it were also a big part of the meet (Coach’s Mook, Jeff & Kameron). Thanks to all our coaches and swimmers who helped push these kids to such great efforts!  The list of those who scored is below.  Those who won at least one individual event are listed in bold letters.

Rebecca Brandt (10), Erin Florence (11), Tiffany Futscher (11), Emma Gruber (14), Alvin Jiang (10), Pauli Kerr (10), Ellis Ko (11), Madeleine Marcos (13), Logan McGill (13), Lauren Murski (13), Alex Ober (10), Adam Rathjen (11), Natalie Rathjen (13), Ali Smith (14)

Southern Zone Age Group Swimming Champs (July 28 – Aug 1)

Several of our Mustangs were fortunate to have been chosen to compete in Orlando, Florida for the Southern Zone meet which is an incredibly competitive meet sponsored and run by USA Swimming.  Our Mustangs represented our local swim committee proudly (North Texas LSC).  Below is a list of those who made the trip.  Most impressive Mustangs!

Megan Ernst (16), Tanner Harris (15), Alyssa McElya (16), Will McNamara (16), Kenzie Murphy (12), Leon Tjahjono (15), Jake Watters (14)

Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently looking for several volunteers to help us with key volunteer positions at Mustang hosted meets.   Anyone interested in learning to be a meet director, Hytek computer operator or Colorado Timing operator should contact one of our meet directors.   These positions all offer many opportunities to interact with the swimmers, coaches and officials and require some basic training.  The North Texas LSC will be offering training classes at the end of September.  Your training class can be followed up with hands on training at the Haunted Hat meet which we will host on October 31.   Please consider joining our team of dedicated operators and meet directors.  Anyone interested may contact Dee Koranda (dee.koranda@gmail.com ) or Jan Miller (jmillerrock@gmail.com ) for further information.

Officials Needed

Anyone interested in becoming a USA Swim Official please have them contact Stephanie Jones via phone at 972 974 3934 or by e-mail at sacjones61@yahoo.com

Tuition may be paid annually or monthly.  Monthly Tuition must be paid via credit card only.  NO checks will be accepted at any pools or through the mail.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  Annual tuition may be paid by check submitted with your registration form.

·       Tuition is due the first of every month. There will be a $5.00 per family late fee after the 10th of the month for non-zero balance accounts.
